Men's Basketball Pulls Away From New Haven, Wins Sixth Straight

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Junior BJ Cardarelli (Manchester, Conn.) totaled a season-high 19 points as Southern New Hampshire University pulled away from the University of New Haven for a 77-55 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory Thursday night at Charger Gymnasium.  The Penmen won their sixth in a row to improve to 13-5 overall and 11-3 in the NE-10, while the Chargers now stand 11-8 and 6-7 in the league.

Cardarelli finished 8-11 from the floor to lead four SNHU players in double figures.  Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) finished with 17 points on 7-10 shooting, while Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) recorded 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.  Devin Gilligan (Amherst, N.H.) added 12 points.

Jonny Ocasio led New Haven with 18 points, while Eric Anderson added 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire led most of the way and held a 50-47 lead with 12:26 left when it embarked on a 12-2 run capped by a Cardarelli layup with 7:46 to play to build a 62-49 advantage.  Following a New Haven basket, the Penmen scored 10 straight points to take a 72-51 lead on a Bonsignore basket with just under four minutes to play.

The Penmen led 38-34 at halftime, but an early 10-5 run by New Haven gave the Chargers their lone lead of the half, 44-43.  Bonsignore gave SNHU the lead back for good on his basket with 15;28 to go.

The first half saw five ties, the last on an Ocasio basket with 3:06 remaining that tied the game 29-29.  Southern New Hampshire closed the half on a 9-5 run and a Bonsignore basket 32 seconds before intermission gave the guests a 38-34 lead at the break.

Southern New Hampshire shot 64% in the first half and 61.5% for the game while knocking down eight of its 17 three-point attempts.  New Haven, which was outrebounded 32-29, shot just 35.1%, including a 7-23 effort behind the arc.

SNHU is idle until Tuesday, February 3 when it hosts The Lincoln (Pa.) University in a 7:00 non-conference contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
