Southern New Hampshire University fell to the College of Saint Rose on Saturday in Northeast-10 Conference volleyball action at the SNHU Field House, 3-1. The Penmen took the opening game, 25-22, before the Golden Knights stormed back to take the final three by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 26-24.
The teams exchanged points to open the first before SNHU built a seven-point lead. Back-to-back kills by freshman Holly Adams (Hopkinton, Mass.) and sophomore Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) gave the hosts a 7-5 lead, and a service ace from senior Nina McGouldrick (Richardson, Texas) pushed the advantage to three. After two straight points by Saint Rose cut it to 8-7, the Penmen reeled off eight of the next 10 points to build a 16-9 edge. The Golden Knights battled back and knotted the score at 22 apiece before Southern New Hampshire came out of a timeout and closed the game with three straight points to secure the first.
After Saint Rose cruised to a 25-15 win in game two, the Penmen came out strong in the third. With the score tied at six, McGouldrick and junior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) combined for five kills on the next six points to move the hosts ahead 11-7. Jennifer Gundrum responded with a kill before serving the Golden Knights to their next three points to tie things up at 11. A back-and-forth battle ensued until CSR was able to string together a run of three-straight points to take a 24-21 lead. A kill by Salamun kept the game alive and made it 24-22 before Grace Campbell provided the clinching point for the visitors.
In the fourth, SNHU fell behind 21-14 and used a 10-2 run to climb back into the game, and the match. The Penmen took six of the ensuing seven points, highlighted by kills from Adams and senior Maeghan Higgins (Hesperia, Calif.), and a service ace from Salamun. CSR used a timeout and a kill by Maryellen Devic to make it 23-20 before Wehrmann set up four consecutive kills, the first by Higgins and the final three off swings by sophomore Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.), to give Southern New Hampshire a 24-23 advantage. The lead would be short-lived, as the Golden Knights claimed the next three points to take the fourth, 26-24.
Coronis led the Penmen attack with 14 kills and a .423 hitting-percentage. Salamun added 10 kills and McGouldrick chipped in with nine. Senior Catherine Cotton (Murphy, Texas) recorded 17 digs, Higgins added 15 and Wehrmann dished out a match-high 37 assists.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire combined to hit .188 as a team on Saturday, which is its highest hitting-percentage as a team since it turned in a .253 effort against Stonehill College on Sept. 29.
- The Penmen have dropped four consecutive matches for the first time since 2012 when they closed out the season with setbacks against Pace University, Adelphi University, Bentley University and American International College.

Southern New Hampshire will look to get back on track on Friday when it travels to the University of New Haven for a 7 p.m. match against the Chargers.
