Men's Hoop Betters Record to 2-0 After Breezing Past Dominican (N.Y.), 85-56

Senior Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) and freshman Daquaise Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) each scored a game-high 17 points as the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team posted an 85-56 win against Dominican (N.Y.) College at the Bridgeport Men's Basketball Classic on Sunday afternoon at Hubbell Gymnasium.

Sanders was 6-for-10 from the field, including a sizzling 4-for-6 from deep, and 1-for-2 at the line, while tallying seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Andrews was impressive in his second career game as he was 5-for-11 from the floor, including 1-for-3 from long range, and 6-for-7 from the stripe to go along with nine rebounds, four steals and two assists.

The rest of the Penmen starting lineup was also in double figures. Junior Chris Walters (Stamford, Conn.) posted 12 points (3-6 FG, 6-8 FT) and five rebounds, while junior Adrian Oliveira (Pawtucket, R.I.) collected 11 points (5-9 FG, 1-1 3-FG) and seven assists. Junior Devin Gilligan (Amherst, N.H.) netted 10 points (3-5 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 3-6 FT) and grabbed three rebounds.

Kristopher Hargraves led the Chargers with 10 points.

Sanders and Andrews each scored five points as Southern New Hampshire, which never trailed in the game, jumped out to a 12-2 led within the first four minutes of the contest. The Penmen would not let up as just over a minute later they ripped off a 12-4 run that included six points from Walters and doubled the lead to 24-8 with 11:44 remaining in the opening half.

Dominican later used four points each from Hargraves and Austin John Higgins to craft an 8-0 run that trimmed its deficit to 37-24 at the 5:15 mark. The Penmen did not rest long, however as two buckets from freshman Remo Simankevicius (Melbourne, Australia) bookended a 10-0 burst, which also featured 3-pointers from Sanders and Gilligan, and broke open a 47-24 advantage inside the final two minutes of stanza. SNHU would lead 49-28 at the break.

The Chargers opened the second half with a 6-1 spurt that made it 50-34 just over two minutes in. The Penmen answered with a 16-5 run, however, that was crafted by six different scorers and stretched the lead to 66-39 with 11:29 to go. A Simankevicius jumper gave the Penmen their largest lead of the game at 83-50 with 2:40 to play.

Simankevicius notched eight points (3-9 FG, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds and two assists off the bench.

Notes:
- The Penmen begin the season 2-0 for the second straight year.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot Dominican, 48.3 percent (29-60) to 36.7 percent (18-49), including 42.1 percent (8-19) to 31.3 percent (5-16) from deep.
-Neither team fully capitalized at the line as the Penmen went 19-for-31 (61.3%) and the Chargers shot 15-for-27 (55.6%).
-SNHU won the glass (40-34) and the paint (36-24), while also featuring a much better assist-to-turnover ratio (19/10-6/19) that it parlayed into a 22-7 gap in points off turnovers.

What's Next:
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Nov. 18 (7:30 p.m.) when they battle crosstown rival Saint Anselm College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. SNHU tips off its home slate Saturday, Nov. 21 (3 p.m.) when it plays host to Holy Family University at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
