Graduate goalkeeper Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.) stopped all five shots that came his way as the Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College on Tuesday afternoon at Melucci Field.
In a physical match in which the officials allowed both teams a long leash, it was Saint Anselm that came out as the aggressor, owning a 9-3 advantage in shots in the opening stanza. Zucco's diving stop on a Jack Heintzelman bid from 20 yards out in just the sixth minute was the first solid scoring chance for the either team, while nearly 10 minutes later, senior Enzo Giuliani (Toulouse, France) was denied in close by Saint Anselm goalkeeper Helio Meirelles Neto. Zach Heckt nearly connected on the game's first goal in the 24th minute, but his shot drilled the crossbar to keep it scoreless.
The Penmen flipped the script for the remainder of the contest, holding a 10-6 shot advantage in the second half and overtime periods, combined. It was Saint Anselm, however, that came closest to getting that golden goal as Zucco was forced to make a great stop on a redirected cross just 1:10 into the first extra session.
