Senior Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) recorded 10 kills, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team fell to Saint Michael's College, 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-13, 25-17), Tuesday evening at the Ross Sports Center.
Saint Michael's pulled away in the opening set and went up big, 21-11, before an 11-2 rush from the Penmen – with three kills apiece coming from Wehrmann and junior Carolyn Scacchi (Peabody, Mass.) – slashed their deficit to 23-22. The Purple Knights stopped the bleeding, however, and picked up the final two points to grab a 1-0 lead in the match.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 4-0 lead and was ahead 10-4 before a 9-2 run from Saint Michael's later in the match gave it a 19-17 edge. SNHU would net eight of the set's final 11 points – with Wehrmann and freshman Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) each contributing two kills – to even the match at 1-all.
Saint Michael's came roaring out of the gate in set No. 3, going up 11-2 and then 18-8 before cruising to the victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth, the Purple Knights would open an early 4-1 advantage, but a 5-1 spurt later in the set gave the Penmen their only lead at 15-14. Saint Michael's responded with a decisive 11-2 run to end the set and the match.
Costales (5 digs), Scacchi and junior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.; 4 digs, 2.5 blocks) all racked up seven kills, while senior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) added six kills and a career-high 14 digs. Junior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) totaled a match-high 23 digs, while freshman Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied 14. Fellow freshman Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) notched a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs.
Notes:
-The Penmen outhit the Purple Knights, .109- -.019 in the second set, but Saint Michael's owned a .157-.052 advantage for the match.
