Senior Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) recorded nine kills and freshman Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) notched a double-double, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team was handed a 3-0 loss (25-15, 25-20, 25-16) by American International College on Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.
With the opening set tied at four early on, American International reeled off a 9-4 run to open up a 13-8 lead. The gap was still five later on when four straight points ran the lead to 19-10 for the Yellow Jackets, who cruised to victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.
AIC jumped out to a 13-3 lead in set No. 2 before an 8-2 counter-run – capped by a pair of kills from Coffey – pulled Southern New Hampshire within 15-11. A kill from Wehrmann later in the set sliced the Penmen deficit to one at 17-16, but the Yellow Jackets posted eight of the set's final 12 points to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
American International again moved out to a large lead in the third set as it scored seven straight to go in front, 10-3. The Yellow Jackets held a 19-13 advantage when they wrapped up the set with a 6-3 spurt to sweep the match.
Coffey tallied 20 assists, 10 digs and five kills on .833 hitting. Junior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) chipped in four kills, five digs and four blocks, while junior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) collected eight digs.
Notes:
-The Penmen outhit the Yellow Jackets, .233-.176, in the second set, but AIC owned a .223-.156 advantage for the match.
