Sophomore Miranda Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.) scored in the 95th minute to lift the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a 3-2 overtime victory against the College of Saint Rose on Saturday at Sullivan Field in the Northeast-10 opener for both teams as the Penmen knocked off the Golden Knights in a regular-season match for the first time in nearly 22 years.
Peloquin tallied a goal and an assist, while freshman Devyn Jacobs (Northbridge, Mass.) potted a pair of goals in the win.
Deadlocked at 2-2, the Penmen notched the game winner at the 94:21 mark when Peloquin received a pass from junior Abigail Maker (Naples, Maine) in the middle of the box and touched it home past Saint Rose goalkeeper Marika Laurendeau.
That goal shook the proverbial monkey off of Southern New Hampshire's back as it gave the Penmen their first regular-season win against the Golden Knights since a 5-0 victory in Albany back on Oct. 10, 1994.
Saint Rose struck first just 7:39 into the match as Elisa Galbiati headed in a feed from Sammy Blizzard past senior goalkeeper Autumn Scanlon (Waltham, Mass.) to give the Golden Knights an early 1-0 advantage.
The score stayed that way through halftime until Jacobs converted a penalty kick for her first career goal to even the game just 4:49 into the second half.
Jacobs enjoyed the experience so much, she scored a second time less than two minutes later when she popped in a short lofted pass from Peloquin to hand the Penmen a 2-1 lead midway through the 52nd minute.
Saint Rose would tie the match in the 69th minute when Nina Predanic's through-ball found the foot of Julia Porzio, who then found the back of the net to make it 2-2.
Notes:
- Scanlon made one save for the Penmen. Laurendeau stopped four of the five shots she faced over the final 49:21, while Madison Taylor turned away three of five in the first half.
- Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Rose, 17-7, including 14-2 in the second half and overtime, combined.
- The Penmen have now won three straight since their season-opening loss on Sept. 2.
- The win is SNHU's first against Saint Rose since a 1-0 Northeast-10 Championship semifinal victory in Albany on Nov. 2, 2012.
- Saint Rose, the 2011 NCAA National Champions, was 13-0-3 against Southern New Hampshire over the previous 16 regular-season games dating back to 1995.
- Jacobs' penalty kick strike was SNHU's first goal against the Golden Knights in a span of 340:08, dating back to the 2012 NE-10 semifinal match.
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Sept. 14 (7 p.m.) when they play host to American International College under the lights at Larkin.
