Freshman Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) posted 16 kills and 16 digs as the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team rallied from two sets down for a 3-2 victory (21-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-8) Wednesday night against Assumption College at Laska Gymnasium.
Southern New Hampshire trailed, 2-0, going to the third set and seemed headed for its eighth straight loss. The Penmen kept it tight, however, in a set that neither team led by more than two until an 8-1 surge, which featured a trio of kills from Maguire, put the Penmen up, 24-19. Assumption would reel off four straight points, but a kill from freshman Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) forced a fourth set.
In that fourth set, SNHU used four straight attack errors from the Greyhounds and a pair of kills from senior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to power a 9-3 run that opened up a 13-7 lead. Assumption responded with a 14-5 counter-run to grab a 21-18 advantage, but a pair of Maguire kills buoyed a 5-1 spurt that put the Penmen in front, 23-22. The hosts would even the set, but a kill from junior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) and a service ace by freshman Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) leveled the match at 2-2.
The Penmen jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth and final set, but Assumption answered to eventually knot the stanza at 6-all. Southern New Hampshire reeled off the next three points and then led 10-8 when a pair of Coronis kills fueled a match-clinching 5-0 run.
The double-double was the fourth of the season for Maguire, while Coffey notched her fourth straight and sixth overall with 47 assists, a career-high 21 digs and three service aces. Salamun hit .357, while racking up 13 kills, six digs and a pair of block assists, with Coronis going for 12 kills, seven digs and two total blocks. Costales chipped in seven kills and five digs. Freshman Jessie Leclerc (Englewood, Fla.), junior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and sophomore Shaira Sanabria (Tampa, Fla.) collected 16, 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
With the opening set tied at 17, Assumption scored three straight points and was ahead, 24-20, when a Coronis kill again made it a three-point set. Zara Valez ended the set with a kill to put the Greyhounds up, 1-0, however.
With set No. 2 tied, 8-8, Assumption used a 6-1 run to open a 14-9 advantage. The Greyhounds would then hold leads of 19-12 and 23-15 before closing out the set to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
