Freshman Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) racked up 25 kills and 26 digs as the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team split its final two matches at the Raider Classic on Saturday at Shippensburg University's Heiges Fieldhouse. The Penmen made quick work of Dominican (N.Y.) College with a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-20, 25-21) in the first match, before dropping a thrilling five-set affair (18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 24-26, 15-5) to Concord University.

In the first set of the win over the Chargers, the Penmen held a 5-4 edge when they ripped off a 10-3 run, which included a pair of kills from junior Carolyn Scacchi (Peabody, Mass.), to open up a 15-7 advantage and would cruise from there.

The second set was a bit more tightly contested as SNHU used a 5-1 spurt to open up a six-point advantage later in the stanza, but Dominican would trim the deficit in half at 19-16. The Penmen would hold on, however, as the Chargers never came closer in the set.

Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the third set, but Dominican would climb back in it and eventually owned an 18-16 advantage. SNHU dropped the hammer from there, however, closing the set on a 9-3 run that featured a pair of kills from junior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) and earned the Penmen their first win of the season.

Coronis led the way with nine kills on the strength of a .412 hitting percentage, to go along with four digs and a pair of service aces. Freshman Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) tallied 25 assists, nine digs, five kills and a pair of blocks, while junior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) added 12 digs.

A pair of kills from senior Megan Salamun (Scottsdale, Ariz.) paced the Penmen to an early 7-2 lead in the first set of their match with Concord and the Mountain Lions would never get closer than four as SNHU claimed the first set.

Concord responded, however, by building a 5-0 lead in the second set as it led wire-to-wire to even the match.

In the third, it was Southern New Hampshire once again crafting an early lead as two Coronis kills made it 3-0 before the Penmen eventually went up, 6-2. Concord would storm back to forge a 7-7 tie that created a back-and-forth battle in which neither team led by more than two the rest of the set. Trailing, 24-22, SNHU received a big kill from Coronis, but her attack error on the ensuing sequence gave the set to Concord.

The Penmen would not go away, however, snapping a 4-4 deadlock in the fourth set to open up a 10-6 lead. Concord would again respond and led, 24-23, but a pair of Maguire kills powered a run of three straight points that tied the match at 2-all.

The momentum would not carry over for Southern New Hampshire, however, as Concord built a commanding 12-2 lead and easily won the fifth set.

Maguire posted 20 kills and 19 digs, with Coffey collecting 50 assists and 15 digs as both recorded their first career double-doubles. Coronis totaled 16 kills, while Schurman tallied 24 digs. Sophomore Shaira Sanabria (Tampa, Fla.) chipped in 12 digs. Senior Victoria Wehrmann (Dallas, Texas) chimed in with nine kills, six digs and two blocks.

Notes:
-Southern New Hampshire hit .370 in the first set against Dominican and then came back at .280 in the second set as it outhit the Chargers, .248 to .021 on the day.
-The 50 assists for Coffey are the most for a Penmen rookie since current interim head coach Catherine Cotton handed out 51 in a 3-2 loss at Saint Rose on Oct. 26, 2012.

Up Next:
The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Sept 6 (7 p.m.) when they take on Merrimack College in non-conference action. The home opener for the Penmen is Tuesday, Sept. 13 (7 p.m.) when they play host to Saint Anselm College at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
