HIGHLIGHTS

When and Where: October 3, 2017 – Manchester, N.H. (SNHU Fieldhouse)
Score: American International College 3, Southern New Hampshire University 2
Records: AIC 10-8 (3-1 NE10), SNHU 4-9 (1-4 NE10)

Senior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) and sophomore Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) led four players in double figures with 14 kills each, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team suffered a deflating 3-2 loss to American International College, (14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 16-14) on Tuesday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.

Back-to-back kills from Maguire started the match, as Southern New Hampshire notched the first four points as part of an 11-2 run. Coronis and junior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) also contributed two kills each during the stretch. Two more kills from Coronis buoyed a 4-1 spurt that extended the lead to 15-4. SNHU held a 20-7 lead when AIC recorded seven of the next 11 points to climb within 24-14. Maguire finished off the first set with a kill that put the Penmen up, 1-0, in the match.

SNHU owned a 22-20 lead in the second set when three kills from Annie Boele, and a service ace and kill from Jana Potic, made up a 5-0 blitz that allowed the Yellow Jackets to steal the set and tie the match, 1-1.

With the third set tied at 10, a 6-1 run gave AIC a 16-11 lead. The Penmen would get as close as 18-15, but three straight points as part of a 4-1 spurt nudged the lead to 22-16. Two kills from sophomore Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) would carry a 4-2 counter-run that made it 24-20, but the visitors received a kill from Andrea Dillon to go in front, 2-1, in the match.

Set No. 4 was even at 7-all when five straight points sparked a 9-1 run that put Southern New Hampshire on top, 16-8. The lead was still eight at 23-15 when back-to-back errors by the Yellow Jackets gave the Penmen the stanza and sent the match to a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set was knotted, 6-6, when three kills from Maguire highlighted an 8-1 surge that put the Penmen in the driver's seat at 14-7. Needing just one point to win the match, however, Southern New Hampshire could not find it, as nine straight points, including a match-ending block, gave AIC the improbable victory.

Coronis added nine digs to her match-high in kills, while Maguire's 14 marked a season best. Costales hit .588 while gathering 12 kills, with Dillon recording a triple-double of 10 kills, 12 assists and 19 digs. Sophomore Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) dished out 32 assists and tallied 10 digs for a double-double, while senior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) collected 23 digs. Junior Shaira Sanabria (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) chimed in with 10 digs and a pair of service aces. Senior Carolyn Scacchi (Peabody, Mass.) added five kills.

Notes:
-The Penmen had won two of their last three entering the match.
-Southern New Hampshire outhit American Int'l in the first and fourth sets, while each team hit .182 for the match.
