Senior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) registered a career-high 28 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team to a five-set victory against Queens (N.Y.) College, 24-26, 27-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-7 on Friday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
The first set was a battle of the see-saw, with Southern New Hampshire holding a 24-23 edge when a trio of errors gave Queens the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set No. 2 was also a closely-contested battle, with Coronis producing her 1,000th career kill to give SNHU an 18-17 lead. The Penmen were later trailing, 23-22, before a kill from Coronis and an attack error leaped SNHU in front, 24-23. Queens would knot the set at 24 and 25 before an attack error and a kill from sophomore Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) evened the match, 1-1.
Queens held an 11-10 edge in the third set when a Coronis kill sparked a 7-2 run that put Southern New Hampshire in the lead at 17-13. The advantage was 23-17 when the Knights reeled off four straight to trim their deficit to one, but kills from Coronis and sophomore Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) would sandwich a Queens kill to put the Penmen up, 2-1, in the match.
The Knights would move out to a 9-1 lead in the fourth set before an 8-3 spurt – with four kills from Coronis – helped SNHU climb back to within 12-9. Southern New Hampshire still trailed by three at 22-19 when Queens scored three straight to send the match to a fifth set.
With that deciding stanza knotted at 6-all a Coronis kill and service ace triggered a match-closing 9-1 blitz that was capped with a pair of service aces from senior Kathleen Schurman (Burnt Hills, N.Y.).
Coronis' 28 kills came on .345 hitting and went along with 10 digs and a pair of service aces. Maguire posted 13 kills on .345 hitting and five digs, with Costales adding seven kills. Junior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) tallied five kills, 38 assists and 13 digs. Schurman collected 24 digs and four service aces, while junior Shaira Sanabria (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) chipped in 11 digs and three service aces.
Notes:
-Coronis becomes the third Penmen ever to reach the 1,000-kill plateau.
-SNHU has now won three of its last five.
-Southern New Hampshire outhit Queens in the second (.179-.043), third (.355-.242) and fifth (.333- -.062) sets, as well as .239-.151, overall.
