Senior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) totaled 27 kills and 16 digs, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team lost a pair of matches at the Yellow Jacket Invite on Saturday at American International College's Butova Gymnasium. SNHU was swept, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-13) by Edinboro University and then dropped a 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 28-26, 25-16) decision to the host Yellow Jackets.
Junior Priscila Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) racked up 18 kills and 31 digs. Junior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) tallied 35 assists and 18 digs, with sophomore Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) posting 30 assists and 28 digs.
In the first set against Edinboro, Southern New Hampshire was within striking distance at 19-17 when the Scots reeled off five of the next six points to make it 24-18. Three straight kills from Coronis sliced the deficit in half, but Edinboro received a kill from Cierah Jackson to go up 1-0 in the match.
The Penmen again trailed 19-17 in set No. 2 when Edinboro closed the stanza on a 6-1 run that made it 2-0.
In what would be the final set of the match, Edinboro led, 8-6, before a 12-4 burst ballooned the advantage to 20-10. With the score at 21-12, the Scots would capture the match with a 4-1 spurt.
Coronis recorded double-digit kills with 12, while Castro notched six kills and 13 digs. Coffey handed out 15 assists and collected 13 digs, with Dillon chipping in 10 kills and seven digs.
In the opening set against AIC, the Penmen trailed by just a pair at 14-12 when a 4-1 spurt widened the gap to five. SNHU stopped the bleeding momentarily with two straight points, but the Yellow Jackets would count up six straight as part of a 7-1 set-ending run.
With the second set tied at 15-all, a Coronis service ace and kills from Castro and Dillon powered a 6-1 run that gave SNHU a 21-16 advantage. AIC would rebound by winning eight of the next 11 points to even the match at 24-24, but a kill from Coronis and attacking error by the Yellow Jackets gave the Penmen the win to level the match, 1-1.
Southern New Hampshire trailed 22-18 in the third set when a 6-1 run – with a pair of kills from Coronis – gave the visitors a 24-23 lead. AIC then twice tied the set before kills from Dillon and Castro gave SNHU the lead back at 25-24 and 26-25, respectively, but the Yellow Jackets would grab three straight points to win the set, 28-26, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In what would be SNHU's final set of the afternoon, AIC jumped out to an 8-1 lead and was ahead 21-11 when three kills from sophomore Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) highlighted a 5-1 run that trimmed the deficit to 22-16, but the Yellow Jackets would score three straight to take the match.
Coronis posted a match-high 15 kills and 12 digs, while Castro added in 12 kills and 18 digs. Costales chimed in with nine kills. Dillon tallied 25 assists, 11 digs and six kills, with Coffey handing out 15 assists.
Notes:
-The Penmen hit .333 in the second set against Edinboro, but were outhit in all three sets, as well as .301-.110 for the match.
-Southern New Hampshire outhit AIC in the two middle sets, but the Yellow Jackets boasted a better hitting percentage for the match at .210-.152.
