HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Anselm match

  • After Saint Anselm notched the first three points of the first set, a pair of kills each from Bat and Costales highlighted a 9-2 run that gave the Penmen a 9-5 lead. The teams would then trade the lead three times, with Saint Anselm holding on to a 22-20 edge. Kills from Freckleton and Castro sparked a 3-0 run that put SNHU in front, 23-22. The Hawks would tie the set at 23 and 24, but another Costales kill and Saint Anselm attack error gave Southern New Hampshire the marathon win.
  • Saint Anselm evened the match with a victory in the tightly-contested second set before SNHU snapped a 20-20 tie in the third set on a Bat kill that kicked off a 5-1 stretch. Costales netted a pair of aces during the run, while Lippincott's set-clinching kill pushed the Hawks to the brink.
  • Saint Anselm held an 11-7 lead in the final set when a 12-2 run, buoyed by five Sanabria aces, put the Penmen in front, 19-13. The margin was 24-16 when five kills by Jordan Schamp carried a 7-0 run that slashed the Hawks' deficit to just one at 24-23, but Bat came up with a huge kill to seal it.

Stonehill match

  • Southern New Hampshire trailed, 18-16, in the opening set, when a 7-2 spurt, which included three service aces from Sophia Poveda, gave Stonehill a 1-0 advantage.
  • SNHU again was down just a pair at 24-22 in the second set, but an error gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead.
  • Stonehill left no doubt in the third set, building a 16-5 advantage, before cruising to victory.
