Junior Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded eight kills on .286 hitting, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (16-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20) decision to crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College on Wednesday night in its Northeast-10 opener at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Costales added three service aces, seven digs and three blocks to her stat line.
- Sophomore Irem Bat (Istanbul, Turkey) posted a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs, to go with a trio of blocks.
- Senior Priscila Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) tallied nine kills, eight digs and a pair of blocks.
- Sophomore Joanne Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) dished 18 assists and collected eight digs.
- Senior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) notched a double-double with 14 helpers and 10 digs.
- Junior Baylee Lippincott (Phoenix, Ariz.) chipped in with six kills and five digs.
- Senior Shaira Sanabria (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) racked up 14 digs and two aces.
- Freshman Ramona Fontaine (Chelsea, Mass.) added four kills on .273 hitting and four stuffs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Three kills from Lippincott staked Southern New Hampshire to an early 8-1 lead in the opening set. The margin was down to five later in the set when another 8-1 run, highlighted by three Castro kills, ballooned the advantage to 20-8. An 8-3 spurt from Saint Anselm would pull it within 23-16, but the Penmen secured the final two points, including a kill from Castro that put them in front, 1-0, for the match.
- It was the Hawks, who would jump out to an early lead in the second set, going up 11-3. The advantage was 18-11 when Saint Anselm scored seven of the final 11 points to even the match.
- Saint Anselm built an 11-4 lead in set No. 3 and held on to a 13-9 advantage when the visitors ripped off a 10-4 run that made it 23-13. The Penmen would rattle off four straight, but the Hawks grabbed the final two points, including a set-clinching kill from Jordan Schamp that made it 2-1.
- Southern New Hampshire held an 18-16 edge in the third set, but Saint Anselm would use a 9-2 rush, which included four Catie McCarthy kills, to swipe the set and seal the match.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- SNHU outhit Saint Anselm, .306-.139, in the opening set, but the Hawks held a .186-.120 advantage for the match.
- The Penmen owned a 14-8 margin in blocks.
NOTES
- Since defeating Saint Anselm, 3-1, Aug. 26, Southern New Hampshire has lost five straight.
- Saint Anselm earns a point in the Queen City Cup standings and now holds a 4-3 lead in the battle for Manchester supremacy.
