CHANDLER, Ariz. – Senior Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was recognized as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Most Improved Senior on Tuesday morning.
van Biezen, who was chosen as the ITA East Region Most Improved Senior last week and feted as SNHU's male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this month, was 10-5 in singles play at the time his season was halted, which included a run to the ITA East Regional Championship final and rankings as high as No. 49 in the country and No. 2 in the region. Teaming with his brother, fellow senior and ITA Division II East Region Senior Player of the Year Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands), van Biezen was 7-3 in doubles, with the duo ranking as high as sixth in the East. A business administration major with a 3.72 grade-point average, Bas van Biezen was also selected as a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District At-Large Team honoree.
The national winners were selected from the regional winners by the national awards committee for each division. The SNHU men's tennis program has had a handful of regional winners in its history, but this marks the first time the Penmen have captured a national honor.
