Sophomore Vicente Preto (Sesimbra, Portugal) scored a No. 1 singles victory that gave the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team a 3-1 advantage, but Division I foe Merrimack College roared back to steal a 4-3 win Wednesday night at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
KEY MOMENT
- After Merrimack took the doubles point, SNHU answered with two singles wins to go up, 2-1, in the match. Preto then notched a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the top flight over Ludolph Wiggett to give the Penmen a commanding 3-1 lead.
NOTES
- After not starting 0-2 since 2009-10, Southern New Hampshire now begins the season with two losses for the second straight year.
- SNHU leads the all-time series with Merrimack, 15-11, but sees its 10-match winning streak come to an end, as the Warriors topple the Penmen for the first time since April 7, 2015 in Manchester (8-1). SNHU had also won eight-in-a-row at home in the series.
