MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University men's and women's golf head coach Matt Arvanitis captured the New Hampshire Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) Championship on Tuesday, with women's assistant coach Tara Watt claiming the New Hampshire Women's Golf Association Amateur Championship on Wednesday.
Arvanitis, who won the event in 2011 and 2018, fired a 3-under 68 in Monday's opening round at North Conway Country Club, before matching it Tuesday to win by five strokes with a 6-under 136, as one of just two golfers to finish under par. He collected a tournament-best 11 birdies over 36 holes, while his 31 pars or better also led the way.
Not to be outdone, Watt claimed her second title and first since 2011 at Bretwood Golf Course in Keene with a 7-over 223. Watt made three birdies to card a 76 in Monday's opening round, before three more birdies and a 1-over 73 Tuesday put her in position to win. On the strength of an eagle on No. 5 Wednesday, Watt fired a 74 that sealed the deal and sent her to a three-shot victory. Watt was not even supposed to play in the tournament, but after her June 26 wedding was postponed until next year due to COVID-19, she entered the field on the second-to-last-day before the deadline.
