SNHU Ice Hockey Drops Season Opener To Rivier, 5-4

Fiorino Tallies One of Three Penmen Power-Play Goals Friday

Senior captain Joe Fiorino (Willow Grove, Pa.) tallied one of three SNHU power-play goals, but the Penmen fell 5-4 to Rivier University Friday night.  It was the first regular-season contest for the new Raider program.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Penmen owned the first half of the game, building a 4-1 lead mid-way through the second period.
  • Stewart scored the first goal of the season at 9:32 of the first period off assists by Thurston and Cox.
  • Cox gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead at 1:03 of the second period, with senior Alex Ring (Salem, N.H.) and sophomore Matt Amante (West Hempstead, N.Y.) added assists.
  • After a Rivier tally, the Penmen added two more power-play goals by Thurston and Fiorino to open a 4-1 lead.
  • The Raiders tied the game before the end of the second period, and scored the game-winner by Milan Breczko at 12:52 of the third period to earn the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Penmen had a 44-22 shot advantage in the contest.  Goalie J T Kossakowski (Elburn, Ill.) made 17 saves.
  • SNHU was penalized six times for 12 minutes compared to Rivier's five penalties for 10 minutes. 
NOTES
  • This was the first of two meetings between the teams this season.  They will meet again at The Ice Den on January 28.
  • It was a strong return for Cox, who was limited to eight games in 2019 with a knee injury.  He was named to the NE10 All-Rookie team in 2018.
  • Amante, making his SNHU debut, also assisted on the Fiorino power-play goal for his first points.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • SNHU is off until next Fri. Nov. 5 when the Penmen will open NE10 play at Franklin Pierce.
  • The first home contest at The Ice Den in Hooksett will be Sat. Nov. 6 at 7:40 p.m. when the Penmen play Framingham State.
