Ice Hockey Beats Post 3-1 for Fourth Straight Win

Sophomore Matt Amante (West Hempstead, N.Y.) scored twice as Southern New Hampshire defeated Post University 3-1 in NE10 ice hockey action on Saturday at The Ice Den.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Amante - 2 goals
  • Freshman Ryan Clear (Cherry Hill, N.J.) - goal
  • Junior George Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) - assist
  • Senior Cole Stewart (Alpharetta, Ga.) - assist
  • Senior Adam Mercer (Belchertown, Mass.)  stopped 45 of 46 shots to earn the win
KEY MOMENTS
  • The teams played a scoreless first period - Post outshot the Penmen 12-8.
  • Amante's first goal, at 2:21 of the second period, came on a rebound off a blast from inside the blue line by freshman Ethan Rodriguez (Sioux City, Iowa).  
  • The Eagles made it 1-1 at 12:34 when Chase Lapworth took a pass from Trey DeLoury, skated into the Penmen zone, and found the net.
  • Clear scored the game-winner just 26 seconds later when the Penmen took advantage of a turnover behind the Post net.  Junior Andrew Ray (Cumberland, Maine) and freshman Connor Ball (Webster, N.Y.) did the hard work to get the puck to Clear for the shot that made it 2-1.
  • Amante added an insurance goal at 15:41 of the final period to make it 3-1 when he tipped in a shot from Thurston.  Stewart also was awarded an assist on the play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Post had a 46-37 shot advantage for the contest.  
  • The teams combined for nine minor penalties.  Each team went 0-for-3 on the power play.
NOTES
  • The teams will meet one more time, on January 8 in Shelton, Conn.   The Penmen lead the all-time series 11-2.
  • Amante and Clear each scored for the first time as Penmen.   
  • Ray, Ball, and Rodriguez each picked up a point for the first time this season.  For Rodriguez, it was his first career point.
