#24 Men's Basketball Comes Up Short at Saint Anselm, 74-66

Sophomore Jacari Sanders (San Antonio, Texas) scored a season-high 24 points Tuesday night, but the 24th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team dropped a 74-66 decision to crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

  • Sanders – 24 points (8-20 FG, 1-5 3-FG, 7-10 FT), 6 rebounds
  • Sophomore Noah Kamba (Lynn, Mass.) – 13 points (5-9 FG, 1-3 3-FG, 2-2 FT), 4 rebounds, 4 assists
  • Senior Corry Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) – 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3-FG), 4 rebounds
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire trailed by three after the opening five minutes, but back-to-back buckets from Sanders triggered a 10-0 run that catapulted the Penmen into the lead at 14-7 with 12:34 remaining in the first half. SNHU would bring a 35-30 advantage into the break.
  • After an 8-2 run put Saint Anselm in front, 45-41, less than six minutes into the second stanza, the Penmen would counter with another 10-0 burst – with seven points from Kamba – to grab a 54-48 lead with 11:31 to play.
  • The hosts used an 8-0 run later in the half to go up, 64-60, with 5:16 on the clock and take the lead for good. SNHU was as close as 66-64 a minute later, but the Hawks would score eight of the final 10 to ice it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman Aaron Gray (Providence, R.I.) posted eight points (4-16 FG), six rebounds and four steals.
  • Junior Ryan Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) chipped in four points (2-5 FG) and four boards.
  • Freshman Jordan Brathwaite (Silver Spring, Md.) also added four points (2-2 FG).
  • Freshman Derrick Grant (Plainfield, N.J.) tallied six rebounds and a pair of blocks in 16 minutes off the bench.
  • Saint Anselm outshot SNHU, 50 percent (26-52) to 40 percent (26-65), including 36.8 percent (7-19) to 23.8 percent (5-21) from beyond the arc. The Hawks were also plus-6 at the line, despite the Penmen shooting it better, 75 percent (9-12) to 60 percent (15-25).
  • Saint Anselm won the glass (41-33), featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (15/18-6/13), and scored more points off turnovers (20-8) and on second chance opportunities (14-2). SNHU captured the paint (42-28) and held a narrow edge on the fast break (8-6).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire is 4-1 for the second straight season.
  • Saint Anselm leads the all-time series with SNHU, 39-35, having won eight of the last nine meetings, including six straight.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Sunday, Nov. 28 (2 p.m.) when they travel to take on Bentley University.
  • The next home contest for SNHU is Wednesday, Dec. 1 (7:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Saint Michael's College at the Field House.
