Penmen Fall To WNE, Will Play Stovepipe Consolation

SNHU Sees Six-Game Win Streak Snapped in 3-2 Loss

Freshman Jack Gray (Lowell, Mass.) scored the first short-handed goal of the season for Southern New Hampshire, but the Penmen fell to Western New England University 3-2 in the opening round of the 26th annual Stovepipe Tournament Saturday at The Ice Den.  SNHU will meet Fitchburg State in Sunday's consolation game at 1:40 p.m.  Albertus Magnus College and Western New England will meet in the championship at 4:50 p.m.

  • Junior George Thurston (Plymouth, Mass.) - power-play goal
  • Junior Ryan Coady (Braintree, Mass.) -1 assist
  • Senior Phil Heisse (Overland Park, Kan.) - 1 assist
KEY MOMENTS
  • Western New England's Lliam Christiano scored the game's first goal in the final minute of the first period while on the power-play.
  • With the Penmen down a man late in the second period, Gray scored on a short-handed breakaway to tie the contest at 1-1.  It was his third goal of the season.
  • Christiano's second goal of the game for the Golden Bears, at 9:42 of the final period, made it 2-1.
  • Just 80 seconds later, Western New England scored again on a goal by Jordie Morgan.
  • The Penmen cut the lead to 3-2 on a power-play goal from Thurston at 18:50.  Phil Heisse and Ryan Coady were awarded assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU outshot Western New England for the game 44-32.
  • The Penmen went 1-for-4 on the power-play and Western New England went 1-for-7
NOTES
  • Thurston's goal was his team-leading 11th of the season - eight of the goals have come on the power-play.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with Western New England 20-5-5.  
  • Albertus Magnus defeated Fitchburg State 3-0 in the Stovepipe nightcap, setting up a championship game between Albertus Magnus and Western New England.
  • Neither school has ever won the Stovepipe.  SNHU has won the event once - in 1998.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • SNHU will meet Fitchburg State at 1:40 p.m. in the consolation game of the Stovepipe Tournament at The Ice Den.  The teams last met in October of 2016.
