Sophomore Noah Kamba (Lynn, Mass.) scored a career- and game-high 24 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team played its second straight overtime game Saturday evening and dropped an 87-83 decision to in-state rival Franklin Pierce University at the FPU Fieldhouse.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Kamba – 24 points (9-23 FG, 5-11 3-FG, 1-3 FT), 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals
  • Sophomore Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.) – 22 points (7-13 FG, 6-12 3-FG, 2-3 FT), 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals
  • Senior Corry Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) – career-high-matching 19 points (7-18 FG, 4-10 3-FG, 1-2 FT), 6 rebounds, 4 assists
KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire led by as many as six in the opening half, but a 16-4 blitz by Franklin Pierce gave it a 36-28 lead with 5:07 remaining before halftime. A Kamba 3-pointer would pull the Penmen within one at 38-37 with 2:23 on the clock, but the Ravens closed the stanza on a 9-3 run to bring a 47-40 lead into the break.
  • SNHU found itself down by 12 just over 90 seconds into the second half before an 11-1 run – bookended by treys from Long, who provided eight points during the stretch – slashed the deficit to two at 53-51 with 15:11 to go.
  • Pierce again built its lead back up to double digits, leading by 11 with over 11-and-a-half-minutes to go when the Penmen ripped off a 20-2 run – with nine points from Kamba and eight from Becht – to grab a 72-65 advantage with 2:13 left. FPU would score eight of the final nine points of regulation, however, including a layup by Isaiah Moore with 13 seconds left that followed a SNHU miss of the front end of a 1-and-1, and tied the game at 73-all.
  • With the score even, 78-78, more than two minutes into the extra session, Franklin Pierce scored seven straight to take an 85-78 lead with 30 seconds on the clock. A Long triple six seconds later gave the Penmen hope, before a Kamba bucket with 13 seconds remaining made it a one-possession game at 86-83, but a Raven free throw with 10 seconds left all but sealed it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman Aaron Gray (Providence, R.I.) posted eight points (3-11 FG, 2-2 FT) and seven rebounds.
  • Junior Ryan Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) tallied six points (2-4 FG, 2-3 FT), and six boards.

  • Franklin Pierce outshot SNHU, 45.1 percent (32-71) to 39 percent (30-77), while the Penmen returned the favor from long range, 40.5 percent (15-37) to 26.4 percent (10-38). FPU was also plus-5 from the line and shot it better, 68.4 percent (13-19) to 61.5 percent (8-13).
  • The Ravens won the glass (50-40), captured the paint (42-28), scored more points on the fast break (14-10) and received more scoring from their bench (15-4), while the Penmen featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (15/8-12/13) and scored more points off turnovers (14-6).

  • SNHU, which defeated Saint Michael's College, 77-73, in overtime Wednesday, plays back-to-back OT games for the first time since Feb. 13-17, 2010
  • The 15 3-pointers made by the Penmen are the most in a game this season and four short of the program record set at Mercy College on Nov. 9, 2019.
  • Long, who established his 19-point career high Wednesday against Saint Michael's, has scored in double figures in seven of eight games this season.
  • Becht leads the NE10 with 30 3-pointers made, while his .462 (30-65) shooting mark from deep is tops in the league amongst shooters with at least 38 attempts.
WHAT'S NEXT
