Women's Tennis Opens Season with 5-2 Triumph Over Franklin Pierce

Sophomore Guntra Upeniece (Riga, Latvia) clinched the match with a singles win at No. 6, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team opened the 2021-22 campaign with a 5-2 victory against in-state rival Franklin Pierce University on Sunday afternoon at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Upeniece took down Zoe Asterio Correa, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
  • Graduate student Natalie Kallmunzerova (Prague, Czech Republic) captured her first win in a Penmen uniform, beating Anais Geslin, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. She also teamed with junior Magdalena Hubickova (Prague, Czech Republic) to edge Geslin and Maria Penalber Aguilo, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles and clinch the doubles point.
  • Hubickova rallied for a 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-8 win against Penalver Agulo at No. 2 singles.
  • Senior Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) defeated Liria Loria, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
  • Senior Elizabeth Dwyer (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and junior Isabella Andrade (Cochabamba, Bolivia) made quick work of Estela Carra and Asterio Correa at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire wins its season opener for the third straight year.
  • The Penmen now lead the all-time series with FPU, 20-7. The win snaps a two-game skid against the Ravens, but SNHU has won 17 of the last 19 in the series.
  • Hubickova betters her career NE10 mark to 17-3, while Etienne is now 25-6.

  • The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Sept. 14 when they take on the University of New Haven.
