Women's Tennis Moves to 2-0 with 5-2 Victory at New Haven

Senior Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) won both her matches, including the clincher at No. 3 singles, to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team to a 5-2 triumph over the University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at the UNH Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Etienne defeated Nicole Mika, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, at No. 3 singles to finish off the victory and also combined with sophomore Guntra Upeniece (Riga, Latvia) for a 6-2 No. 2 doubles win against Lilia Rodriguez and Karim Carreras.
  • Upeniece was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Alexa Orlando at No. 6 singles.
  • Graduate student Natalie Kallmunzerova (Prague, Czech Republic) breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win against Ivana Andric at No. 1 singles.
  • Junior Magdalena Hubickova (Prague, Czech Republic) pulled out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory against Carreras.
  • Senior Elizabeth Dwyer (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and junior Isabella Andrade (Cochabamba, Bolivia) clinched the doubles points by edging Mika and Orlando at No. 3 doubles, 6-4.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 2-0 for the third straight year.
  • The Penmen improve to 12-1 all-time against New Haven and have now won two straight in the series.
  • Hubickova betters her career NE10 mark to 18-3, while Etienne is now 26-6.

  • The Penmen return to action for the ITA East Regional Championships, which take place Sept. 17-20 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
  • The next home match for SNHU is Wednesday, Sept. 22 (3 p.m.) when it plays host to Assumption University at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.
