Senior Sydney Carney (Northborough, Mass.) scored less than a minute into the second half to snap a 1-1 deadlock and the goal would stand up, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-1 victory at the University of Bridgeport on Friday evening at Knights Field.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Two newcomers combined to stake Southern New Hampshire to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as Beaumont fed Keller, who sailed a long shot over the 'keeper.
  • The game went to the half knotted, 1-1, after Bridgeport tied it in the 33rd minute. Just 52 seconds into the second stanza, however, Carney booted one home off a scramble in front to lift the Penmen to a 2-1 lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Z Kaplan (Smithtown, N.Y.) turned aside two of the three shots they faced.
  • Bridgeport goalkeeper Clara Karlsson made eight saves.
  • SNHU outshot the Purple Knights, 14-8, including 10-3 in shots that went on frame.
  • The Penmen also dominated, 10-0, in corner kicks.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 1-0 for the second straight season and the third time in the last four campaigns.
  • The Penmen defensive unit locked down in the second half, as Kaplan did not face a single shot on goal.
  • SNHU now leads the all-time series with Bridgeport, 13-4-2. The Penmen have won five straight against the Purple Knights and are unbeaten in their last six meetings, having not lost since Sept. 11, 2013.
  • The Penmen are now 44-15-10 (.710) over their last 69 matches dating back to the 2016 campaign.

  • The Penmen return to action Sunday (Sept. 5) at noon when they close out their time in Bridgeport against the College of Staten Island.
