Graduate student Verena Weindl (Munich, Germany) clinched the match with a No. 4 singles win and also pulled out a doubles victory that earned a crucial point, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team denied Adelphi University with a 6-1 triumph Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Weindl easily took care of Amanda Franstedt, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. She also combined with freshman Alina Kupfer (Munich, Germany) to earn the doubles point for SNHU by outlasting Carerina Federici and Sanne Selme Gilje, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 2 doubles.
- Kupfer made quick work of Katarina Liedbeck, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
- Senior Magdalena Hubickova (Prague, Czech Republic) pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles against Gilje.
- Graduate student Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) was a 6-3, 6-2 winner versus Federici at No. 3 singles.
- Sophomore Guntra Upeniece (Riga, Latvia) recorded a 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 win at No. 6 singles against Carolina Chaves. Upeniece and junior Isabella Andrade (Cochabamba, Bolivia) also rolled to a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles against Julia Kielan and Chaves.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire begins the season 5-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign.
- The Penmen improve to 10-9 all-time against Adelphi and have now won three of the last four meetings.
- Hubickova is a perfect 5-0 at No. 1 singles this season, while Kupfer is also 5-0 at No. 2 singles.
