Women's Tennis Claims NE10 Regular Season Title with Sweep of Bentley

First outright regular season championship for the Penmen since 2012-13

Sophomore Guntra Upeniece (Riga, Latvia) clinched the match – and thus the NE10 Regular-Season Championship – with a win at No. 6 singles, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team defeated Bentley University, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Upeniece downed Anna Lang, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6 singles and also combined with junior Isabella Andrade (Cochabamba, Bolivia) for a 6-2 win against Remi LeSage and Libby Keefe at No. 3 doubles.
  • Andrade was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over LeSage at No. 5 singles.
  • Senior Magdalena Hubickova (Prague, Czech Republic) blanked Makena Romagnano, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and also teamed with graduate student Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) for a 6-1 triumph over Maria Mella and Adriano Hiraldo at No. 1 doubles.
  • Etienne recorded a 6-3, 6-0 win against Hiraldo at No. 3 singles.
  • Freshman Alina Kupfer (Munich, Germany) made quick work of Mella, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. She also played with grad student Verena Weindl (Munich, Germany) at No. 2 doubles and scored a 6-1 win over Romagnano and Lang.
  • Weindl was ahead, 6-1, on Libby Keefe when she won by retirement.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 10-0 for the first time in program history and completes a perfect 9-0 NE10 slate.
  • It is SNHU's first NE10 Regular-Season Championship since 2012-13.
  • The Penmen earn the No. 1 seed and a bye to the NE10 Championship semifinals. They will host either the fourth-seeded University of New Haven or fifth-seeded Adelphi University on Oct. 21 (2 p.m.).
  • The Penmen lead the all-time series with Bentley, 16-9, and have now won 15-in-a-row versus the Falcons.
  • Hubickova improves to 9-1 at No. 1 singles this season, while Kupfer is now a perfect 10-0 at No. 2 singles.

  • The Penmen will play host to either the University of New Haven or Adelphi University in the NE10 semifinals on Friday, Oct. 21 (2 p.m.) at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
