Men's Soccer Prevails In Penalty Kicks to Advance to NE10 Semifinals

SNHU and Saint Rose Battle to 1-1 Tie Saturday

SNHU and Saint Rose battled through two overtimes in the Northeast-10 Men's Soccer Quarterfinals Saturday before the Penmen advanced with a win in penalty kicks.  The Penmen will play at top-ranked Franklin Pierce Wednesday in a rematch of last season's Semifinal in Rindge.


STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Senior Paul Makaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) – 1 goal
  • Graduate student Jose Saez (Murcia, Spain) – 1 assist
  • Freshman Iago Perez (Oleiros, Spain) – 1 assist
  • Sophomore Preston Neal (Windham, N.H.) – 6 saves
KEY MOMENTS
  • SNHU scored the first goal of the game in the 59th minute.  Perez cornered a ball to Saez, who centered in front for the goal by Makaj, his third goal of the season.
  • The Golden Knights found the equalizer at 76:11.  Harry Soederlind banged a shot off the crossbar that rebounded perfectly for a blast by Andrew Lule to make it 1-1.
  • The Penmen had a great opportunity in the first overtime, but junior Luca Shubitidze (Leipzig, Germany) just missed wide off a terrific feed by freshman Phillipp Hermann (Bruckmuehl, Germany).
  • In the second overtime,  Herrmann had a good look off a pass by graduate student Jaime Selva (Alicante, Spain), but missed wide.
  • SNHU won in penalty kicks, converting all five attempts – Herrmann, Schubitidze, Makaj, Saez made the first four and graduate student Mikel Cortazar (Barakaldo, Spain) hit the clincher.  Saint Rose had missed on the first attempt before converting the next three.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU had a 23-13 shot advantage, including 10-4 in a scoreless first half.
  • Neal made six saves – Tomas Rozman had three saves for Saint Rose.
NOTES
  • The Penmen are 19-1-5 all-time against Saint Rose – with the ties coming in the last five meetings between the NE10 rivals. 
  • SNHU had its season ended via PKs by Saint Rose (0-0) in 2019 in the NE10 quarters.
  • The Penmen had lost four straight PKs -with the most recent win coming in the NCAA quarterfinals in 2013 against Mercyhurst (0-0).
  • Finally, in 2008, SNHU won on PKs against Franklin Pierce (0-0) in the semifinals 11/5 – so this snapped a streak of three straight NE10 postseason PK losses.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • SNHU will play an NE10 Semifinal contest at top-ranked Franklin Pierce for the second consecutive season.  The Ravens won 2-1 in overtime last sesaon.  The game will be played on Wednesday, November 2.
