Graduate student Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) clinched both the doubles point and the match with her two wins, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team claimed its best start in program history with a 6-1 victory against in-state rival Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday afternoon.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Etienne outlasted Ana Platisa, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, at No. 3 singles and also teamed with senior Magdalena Hubickova (Prague, Czech Republic) for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Liria Loria and Platisa.
- Freshman Alina Kupfer (Munich, Germany) took down Loria, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. She also combined with grad student Verena Weindl (Munich, Germany) for a 6-2 No. 2 doubles victory against Maria P. Aguilo and Aynara Ferraz.
- Weindl was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Zoe Asterio Correa at No. 4 singles.
- Junior Isabella Andrade (Cochabamba, Bolivia) won by retirement at No. 5 singles versus Ferraz with the score 6-7 (2-7), 3-0. She also posted a 6-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles with sophomore Guntra Upeniece (Riga, Latvia) against Jillian Pagliuca and Asterio Correa.
- Upeniece notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles versus Pagliuca.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire begins the season 7-0 for the first time in program history,
- The Penmen improve to 21-8 all-time against Franklin Pierce, which had won three of the previous four meetings.
- Hubickova dips to 6-1 at No. 1 singles this season, while Kupfer is now a perfect 7-0 at No. 2 singles.
