Men's Hoop Finishes Strong in 72-58 Exhibition Loss to Syracuse

Okwuosa, Becht and Kamba reach double figures

Sophomore Ethan Okwuosa (No. Haven, Conn.) netted a team-high 12 points, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team wrapped up exhibition play with a 72-58 loss to Division I Syracuse University on Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.

  • Junior Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.) – 10 points (4-12 FG, 2-9 3-FG), 4 rebounds, 2 assists
  • Junior Noah Kamba (Lynn, Mass.) – 10 points (3-9 FG, 1-6 3-FG, 3-4 FT), 5 rebounds, 2 steals
  • Graduate student Ryan Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) – 8 points (3-6 FG, 2-4 FT), 6 rebounds
  • Sophomore Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) – 6 points (2-12 FG, 2-4 3-FG), 8 rebounds, 3 assists
KEY MOMENTS
  • SNHU trailed by just a pair more than two minutes in when Syracuse scored eight of the next nine to open a 14-5 lead with 14:45 remaining in the opening half. It was 16-10 when a 20-4 burst extended the Orange lead to 36-14 with 7:20 to go. The Penmen would go into the locker room, down 43-23.
  • Southern New Hampshire opened the half on a 10-4 run that trimmed its deficit to 47-33 with 14:51 left. SNHU held Syracuse without a field goal for the opening 6:10 of the second stanza. The Orange countered with a 10-2 rush to balloon the lead back to 57-35 with 11:00 left.
  • A 21-9 run from the Penmen – led by eight points from Becht and seven from Kamba – brought the visitors back to within 66-56 with 2:02 to go, but that was as close as they would get.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa.) recorded five points (2-4 FG, 1-1 3-FG) and three boards.
  • Sophomore Derrick Grant (Plainfield, N.J.) chipped in three points (1-5 FG, 1-4 FT) and four rebounds.
  • During the 6:10 stretch without a field goal to start the second half, Syracuse was held to 1-for-10 shooting and turned it over three times.
  • Syracuse outshot SNHU, 39.3 percent (24-61) to 31.3 percent (20-64), including 30 percent (6-20) to 21.7 percent (5-23) from long distance. The Orange were also plus-5 at the line and shot it better, 85.7 percent (18-21) to 54.2 percent (13-24).
  • SNHU outshot Syracuse, 34.4 percent (11-32) to 32.1 percent (9-28), in the second half and were 10-for-13 (76.9%) from the line.
  • SU narrowly won the glass (46-44) and the paint (32-28), featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (16/17-8/17), scored more points off turnovers (19-18), on the fast break (15-12) and tallied more second chance points (22-15).
NOTES
  • This is the second time SNHU has met Syracuse in exhibition action. The Orange posted an 84-54 victory back on Nov. 1, 2017.
  • Syracuse was 16-17 a year ago, including 9-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Orange lost to Duke University, 88-79, in the ACC quarterfinals. Syracuse opens its season Monday, Nov. 7 versus Lehigh University.

  • SNHU officially tips off the season Saturday, Nov. 12 (3 p.m.) at the University of Bridgeport.
  • The first home game for the Penmen is Tuesday, Nov. 22 (7:30 p.m.) when they play host to Bentley University.
