Mercer Makes 63 Saves In SNHU 4-3 Stovepipe Tourney Win over Tufts

Pomposelli Nets Game-Winner for Penmen

Graduate student Adam Mercer (Belchertown, Mass.) stopped 63 shots and freshman Ryan Pomposelli (Needham, Mass.) scored the game-winner as Southern New Hampshire ice hockey edged Tufts University 4-3 in the Stovepipe Tournament Saturday at The Ice Den.  The Penmen will meet New England College Sunday in the Stovepipe Championship.

KEY MOMENTS
 
  • Thurston opened the scoring on the power play at 6:22 of the first period.  After taking a pass from Coady, he skated around a defender at the right dot and buried the shot.
  • At 10:04 of the period, Quigley notched his first goal of the season, picking up the puck in front of the net and shooting back-hand for a 2-0 lead.
  • With 1:21 to go in the period, the Penmen opened a 3-0 lead.  Coady carried the puck out from out of the SNHU zone, scoring on a slapper just inside the Jumbo blue line.
  • Over a span of seven-and-a-half minutes of the second period, Tufts tied the game.  Tyler Sedlak, who put his club on the board, also scored the tying goal at 11:27.
  • Pomposelli's game-winner came at 12:51 of the middle period off a feed from sophomore Ethan Rodriguez (Sioux City, Iowa).
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
  • Tufts outshot the Penmen 66-34, including 30-13 in the first period.
  • SNHU went 2-for-6 on the power play.  The Jumbos were 0-for-4.
 
NOTES
  • Thurston leads the team with seven goals, and leads the NE10 with six power-play goals.
  • Mercer's 63 saves were a career-high.
  • The Penmen are now 15-11-2 all-time vs. Tufts – the teams had not met since Jan. 2014.
  • New England College won the Stovepipe in 2002 – the Penmen last won in 1998.
  • New England College won Saturday's second contest 3-2 over UMass Dartmouth.  Anthony Cinato notched the game-winner at 1:14 of overtime for the Pilgrims.

  • The Penmen will meet New England College at 4:40 p.m. Sunday in the Championship of the Stovepipe Tournament.  UMass Dartmouth and Tufts will play in the Consolation at 1:40 p.m. at The Ice Den in Hooksett, N.H.
