Penmen Tame Panthers 70-65 as Matt Becht Hits for 27

Southern New Hampshire men's basketball held off Adelphi 70-65 on Wednesday night as junior Matt Becht (Vienna, Va.) tallied 27 points, including six three-point field goals.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
 
  • Becht- 27 points (7-10 FG, 6-7 3-FG, 3-3 FT), 3 rebounds
  • Sophomore Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) – 16 points (7-11 FG, 2-6 FT, 5 rebounds, 3 assists
  • Sophomore Ethan Okwuosa (No. Haven, Conn.) – 12 points (4-10 FG, 1-1 3-FT, 3-5 FT), 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Penmen rallied from down seven with about 11:39 to play in the first half to grab a two-point lead at the intermission.  Okwuosa's lay-up with 6:12 to play tied the game at 18-18, and another lay-in a minute leader put the Penmen in front 22-20. 
  • Guillory and Okwuosa combined for 22 points in the first half.  A strong finish on a lay-up by Okwuosa with two seconds left gave SNHU a 34-32 halftime lead.
  • The margin remained within a bucket for the first 11 minutes of the second half, but three-pointers by graduate student Jackson Jordan (Potomac, Md.) and Becht helped the Penmen open a 57-52 lead.
  • Six straight points by the Panthers gave them the lead for the final time with 5:21 to play. 
  • Sophomore Derrick Grant (Plainfield, N.J.) responded with a thunderous dunk and Becht followed with seven consecutive points to make it 65-58 with 3:08 to play.
  • With Adelphi again threatening, graduate student Ryan Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) came up with a big offensive rebound and put-back with :50 left for a 67-63 lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Becht's 27 points were a season-high, and the most he's scored in a game since pumping in 35 at Pace on January 29, 2022.  
  • For the season, Becht has hit on 22-of-42 three-pointers (52.4%).
  • Guillory has had a nice stretch with 54 points in the last three games (18.0 ppg).
  • Okwuosa has hit for at least ten points in five straight games.
  • The Penmen (26-53 - .491) outshot Adelphi (24-55 - .436).  The Panthers did hit 10 three-point field goals (29 attempts) vs. SNHU's nine three-pointers (21 attempts).
  • Adelphi had a 33-31 advantage on the boards and both teams committed 15 turnovers.
  • There were 14 lead changes and the game was tied five times.
NOTES
  • SNHU now leads the all-time series with Adelphi 14-9.
  • The teams will play meet again in conference play on Feb. 4 at Garden City, N.Y.

  • The Penmen will head to Pace University for a game this Saturday (Dec. 3) at 3:30 p.m.
  • SNHU will return to the Stan Spirou Field House on Saturday (Dec. 10) at 2:00 p.m. to play Post University.
