Volleyball's Historic Run Comes to a Close in NCAA National Quarterfinal

Senior Dai Thawnghmung (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Carmen Bernardis (Trieste, Italy) each tallied seven kills, as the eighth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team saw its thrilling postseason run draw to a close with a 3-0 loss to top-seeded and third-ranked Concordia University, St. Paul in the NCAA National Championship quarterfinals at Seattle Pacific University's Royal Brougham Pavilion on Thursday night.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire came out strong against the perennial power, keeping pace with Concordia through the first 32 points (16-16). The Golden Bears, however, capped the opening set with a 9-3 run that gave them a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • SNHU fell behind, 8-4, in the second stanza, but countered with 11 of the next 16 to grab their first lead and go up, 15-13. Four different Penmen recorded kills during the run, including redshirt-junior Ana Pimenta (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who notched a pair. CSP later rattled off five straight points and seven of eight to take a 23-18 lead. The Penmen would not go quietly, however, with two Thawnghmung kills highlighting a 5-0 run that tied the set at 23-all. The Golden Bears would collect back-to-back kills to go up, 2-0.
  • Concordia would storm out to a 17-4 lead in the third frame and led, 23-7, when SNHU scored four of the next five to make it 24-11. The Golden Bears would close it out with a kill, however, to move on to the semifinal round.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 25-11.
  • Pimenta posted three kills and five digs.
  • Senior Kam Blaskey (Ventura, Calif.) notched a pair of kills.
  • Sophomore Deanne Wilson (No. Collins, N.Y.) collected four digs.
  • CSP outhit SNHU in each of the three sets, as well as .430-.092 for the match.
  • The Penmen hit .391 in the opening stanza, but Concordia topped it with a sizzling .615.
  • The Golden Bears held advantages in blocks (7-2) and aces (5-4).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire ends the season having won 13 of its last 17, including eight of 11 and seven of nine.
  • The Penmen, who set a new single-season program record with 19 wins, are now 3-1 (.750) in their first NCAA Championship appearance.
  • This was the first meeting between the two teams.
  • Concordia, ranked third in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll, improves to 77-9 (.895) all-time across 19 NCAA postseason appearances. The Golden Bears are looking for their 10th NCAA National Championship title, having won nine of the last 14.
  • No East Region team has won a set at the NCAA National Championships since 2014. The 23 points for the Penmen in the second set are the most an East Region representative has scored at the NCAA National Championships since the University of New Haven put up 33 in that opening-set win (33-31) in '14.
  • SNHU becomes just the eighth team this season to hit .391 or higher in a single set against Concordia.
