Men's Hoop Uses Blistering Second-Half Shooting to Secure 84-58 Win vs. Assumption

Sophomores Ethan Okwuosa (No. Haven, Conn.) and Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) combined for 39 points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team to Saturday afternoon's 84-58 victory over Assumption University at the Stan Spirou Field House.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire led by one with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening half when a 13-5 run – paced by three points each from Brathwaite, Guillory and Becht – gave the hosts their largest lead of the half at 31-22 with 4:55 left. Assumption would cap the stanza with nine straight, however, to forge a 31-all tie at the break.
  • SNHU would come streaking out of the locker room on a 12-0 rush – with four points from Layman, and three each from Brathwaite and Guillory leading the way – that made it 43-31 a little more than five minutes in. That was the start of a 26-6 blitz to begin the second half that ballooned the advantage to 57-37 with 8:34 remaining. Okwuosa, who scored 12 points during the stretch, netted 10 straight at one point.
  • The margin was still 20 with under three minutes on the clock when a 7-0 run – capped by a corner 3-pointer from sophomore Luke Bramanti (Chelmsford, Mass.) – gave SNHU its largest lead of the contest at 80-53 with 1:01 to go.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Graduate student Ryan Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) posted eight points (3-3 FG, 2-4 FT), four boards and a pair of assists.
  • Freshman Sam Kodi (Manchester, N.H.) added four points (1-2 FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 15 minutes off the bench.
  • SNHU outshot Assumption, 58.9 percent (33-56) to 36.7 percent (22-60), including 42.1 percent (8-19) to 33.3 percent (8-24) from beyond the arc.
  • The Penmen were unconscious in the second half, outshooting the Greyhounds, 83.3 percent (20-24) to 34.5 percent (10-29).
  • Assumption shot it better from the line, 75 percent (6-8) to 66.7 percent (10-15).
  • The Penmen captured the glass (37-27) and the paint (40-26), scored more points off turnovers (12-6) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (13/10-11/10).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has now captured two straight and three of its last six.
  • SNHU leads the all-time series with Assumption, 36-16, and has won 14 of the last 17 meetings, including three of four. The Penmen have also won three straight at home versus the Greyhounds, with Assumption last winning at the Field House Feb. 26, 2019 (66-60).
  • Guillory's double-double is the first of his career.
  • After averaging 1.5 points per game over the first eight contests of the year, Brathwaite has reached double figures in four consecutive contests, scoring 12.8 ppg during that stretch. 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 4 (7:30 p.m.) when they take on American International College.
    The next home contest for SNHU is Tuesday, Jan. 10 (7:30 p.m.) when it plays host to the University of New Haven at the Stan Spirou Field House in a game that will air on WGIR 610-AM and Fox Sports 930-AM.
