Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.) blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning to erase an early 3-0 deficit, but the 11
th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team opened the season with a 5-4 loss to regional-foe Felician University at the Ripken Experience Complex on Thursday night.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Taveras went 1-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
- Senior Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) went 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.
- Gradudate student Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) made his SNHU debut on the mound and allowed five runs, four earned, on just three hits. Additionally, he walked five and struck out 11.
KEY MOMENTS
- Felician pushed across three runs with just a single hit in the home half of the first inning as Roberge issued three walks in the inning and the Penmen committed a throwing error.
- Both teams settled in putting up zeros, until the top of the fifth inning when SNHU rallied to tie it at 3-3.
- Henrie singled and Dylan O'Sullivan (Manchester, N.H.) was hit by a pitch setting up the three-run homer to left field by Taveras.
- The Golden Falcons bounced right back getting two in the home half of the fifth inning by virtue of a two run double by Edwin Tavarez.
- The Penmen added an unearned run on a fielder's choice in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4.
- SNHU got the lead off man on in the top of the ninth, but after a pair of strikeouts, the Penmen runner was gunned out at second on a wild pitch for the game's final out.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Five different Penmen tallied a hit, while Felician notched just three hits in the game: one in the first and two in the fifth.
- Penmen pitching combined to strikeout 15 batters, while the Golden Falcons' staff fanned 12.
- Penn State transfer Ralph Gambino earned with win for Felician as he allowed three runs, all earned, on two hits in five innings.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 11th in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, dropped its season opener for the first time since 2020, when it opened with a loss at Colorado Mesa.
