Cam Caraher (Plymouth, Mass.) went 4-for-5, driving in a pair of runs, and scoring twice, as SNHU finished its season-opened trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. with a 10-9 over Saint Thomas Aquinas on Sunday morning.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Redshirt sophomore Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) opened the game with a double, and was bunted to third by graduate student Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.). A groundout by senior Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) scored the first run.
- The Spartans moved ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning, but the Penmen pushed in front for good with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. A three-run triple by redshirt freshman Dylan O'Sullivan (Manchester, N.H.) was sandwiched between an RBI walk by redshirt sophomore Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.) and a single by senior Ricky Jimenez (Miami, Fla.).
- The Penmen moved in front 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning with three consecutive hits by senior Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.), Caraher, and Schwartz.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, Henrie doubled, and Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) followed with a single. A single by Caraher plated Henrie for a 9-7 lead.
- A sacrifice fly by Taveras in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Penmen a key insurance run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Penmen needed five pitchers to navigate through the game. Senior Angus McCloskey (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made his first start, leaving in the top of the fifth. Redshift sophomore Nick Assad (Franklin, Mass.), sophomore Trevor Anibal (Bedford, N.H.), freshman Freddie Sanchez (Kendall Park, N. J.), and graduate student Preston Yerrington (Manchester, N.H.) all worked. Anibal earned the win picking up six key outs, and Yerrington got the final five outs for his first save.
- Six Penmen had at least two hits in the game. Caraher had four, and Mulcay had three.
NOTES
- Caraher finished the South Carolina trip with 10 hits in 18 at bats. His .556 average leads the team.
- Henrie is 11-for-21 (.524) to open the season. He had one of the five SNHU homers, and leads the team with eight RBI.
- Rivera, at 9-for-20 (.450) also has had a hot start to the season.
- SNHU scored 49 runs over the five games, hitting .363 (65-for-179).
- The Penmen are scheduled to play St. Thomas twice during the month of April. SNHU leads the all-time series with the Spartans 11-7.
UP NEXT
- The next scheduled action for SNHU will come next weekend (March 5-6) at Felician University. The Penmen dropped its opening game in South Carolina 5-4 to the Golden Falcons.
- The Penmen Field opener is scheduled for Saturday, March 26 (12 p.m.) when it plays host to Stonehill College in a doubleheader.
