Dream Season Comes to an End for Women's Basketball

The Penmen Fall to Daeman College, 70-59, in first round of NCAA East Regional

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Graduate student Karlee Ziliak (Evansville, Ind.) scored 19 points to lead SNHU scorers while sophomore Jessica Knight (Hanover, Mass.) posted a double-double, but the top-seeded Penmen women's basketball team fell to the eighth-seeded Daeman College in the first round of the NCAA East Regional Friday night, 70-59, at the Stan Spirou Fieldhouse.  
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS 
  • Ziliak netted (6-17 FG, 4-10 3PT 3-3 FT) and also pulled down 3 rebounds 
  • Knight had a double-double with 16 points (6-18 FG) and 10 rebounds 
  • Daeman College senior Tiara Filbert led all scorers with 26 points (11-24 FG, 5-6 FT) and also chipped in 3 rebounds and 2 steals. 
KEY MOMENTS 
  • Both teams got out to a slow start offensively as the Penmen trailed 14-10 after the first quarter. 
  • Daeman extended the lead to 19-12 in the second quarter before the Penmen went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 19-19. SNHU finished the half with a 25-23 lead after a pair of 3 pointers from Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) and Ziliak. 
  • Ziliak started the second half with a pair of three pointers, but the Wildcats answered with a 3-pointer from Alahna Paige and a pair of jumpers from Mickayla Ivy to take the lead 34-31 with 4:59 left in the 3rd quarter. 
  • The Penmen were trailing 46-39 with 40 seconds left to go in the 3rd quarter before Jenna Roche (Braintree, Mass.) hit a key three-pointer with 10 seconds left to bring the Penmen within four to end the quarter at 46-42.  
  • The Penmen were down 54-47, but pulled within 2 points on a jumper from Jessica Knight with 5:14 left in the game, 54-52.  
  • The Wildcats would pull ahead again with a 9-0 run to lead 65-64 with 49 seconds left in the game and finished with a 70-59 win over the Penmen. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • SNHU shot 22-for-73 (30.1%) for the game while Daeman was 29-64 (43.3%) from the field. 
  • The Wildcats outrebounded the Penmen 49-40. 
  • The game saw four ties and nine lead changes. 
  • Ziliak led SNHU with 19 points (6-17 FG, 4-10 3PT 3-3 FT) 
  • Daeman College Senior, Tiara Filbert led all scorers with 26 points (11-24 FG, 5-6 FT). 
NOTES 
  • This was the first time in SNHU history it hosted an NCAA Regional for women's basketball.  
  • Pace will represent the Northeast-10 Conference in Saturday's 5 p.m. semifinal.  The seventh-seeded Setters knocked off #2 Chestnut Hill 59-53.  Kat Mansaray led the way with 16 points and six rebounds.
  • Pace will meet #2 seed USciences, a 64-38 winner over Le Moyne College.  The Devils pulled away late by hitting 10-of-15 field goals in the fourth quarter.
  • #5 Bentley had a shot at the buzzer to tie #4 Jefferson, but fell 50-47.   The Rams will face Daemen on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
  • The East Region Championship Game will be Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the Stan Spirou Fieldhouse.
WHAT'S NEXT 
  • The loss concludes SNHU's season. The Penmen finished with a 21-7 record and this is the first time the team has made the NCAA Tournament since the 1990 season.
