Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against No. 8 Adelphi, 22-7

Panthers used a 10-goal third quarter to power the win

Garden City, N.Y. -- Sophomore Shelby Cole (Gilford, N.H.) scored two goals, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse team lost 22-7 in the NE10 opener against No. 8 Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers used a 10-goal third quarter to distance themselves from the Penmen.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS  KEY MOMENTS 
  • The Panthers rushed out to a 4-0 lead and led 4-1 after one quarter.
  • Cole scored with 23 seconds left in the first and again just over a minute into the second quarter to trim the lead to 4-2.
  • Adelphi responded with four-straight goals to stretch it to 8-2 with 4:41 left in the half. The Penmen scored the final two goals of the half to cut it to 8-4.
  • The Panthers seized control of the game in the third quarter as they outscored SNHU 10-1 and led it 18-5.
  • Adelphi extended the lead to 20-5 before back-to-back goals to SNHU to make it 20-7 with 8:14 left in the game. The Panthers netted the final two goals of the game to close out scoring.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Junior goalkeeper Caela McCartney (Arvada, Colo.) registered four saves and moves to 2-1 on the year. Senior Hayle Ashford (Atkinson, N.H.) played game's final 17:48 and made a pair of saves.
  • The Panthers held a 41-11 shot advantage for the contest, including 14-1 in the third quarter.
  • Adelphi held and 18-10 advantage in groundballs and 21-10 edge in draw controls.
NOTES 
  • SNHU has lost the last 13 meetings against Adelphi.
  • Adelphi ranked eighth in the most recent IWLCA poll.
WHAT'S NEXT 
  • The Penmen are back in action Tuesday, March 22 (2 p.m.) when they travel to the College of St. Rose. SNHU's next's home game is Saturday, March 26 at noon when its plays host to Queen City rival Saint Anselm College at Penmen Stadium.
