(Garden City, N.Y.) – Redshirt sophomore
Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) went 2-for-4 with a two-run double to help lift #11 SNHU to a 4-2 win on Adelphi Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader. The Penmen rallied with a pair in the ninth inning of the nightcap, but fell 3-2.
GAME 1: SNHU 4 Adelphi 2
- In the top of the third inning, a two-out single by graduate student Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, R.I.) and a walk drawn by redshirt sophomore Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) set up Mercedes for a two-run double and a 2-0 lead.
- Senior Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) had a pair of hits, including a run producing single in the third. He also doubled in the eighth, and scored a fourth run for the Penmen on a wild pitch.
- Adelphi scored its runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single by Anthony Cipri.
- Redshirt sophomore Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) started the opener, allowing two runs in 3.1 IP.
- Sophomore Trevor Anibal (Bedford, N.H.) earned the win with 5.2 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits, walking one, and striking out eight.
GAME 2: Adelphi 3 SNHU 2
- Cipri homered in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead against SNHU starter, senior Angus McCloskey (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
- McCloskey (L, 1-1) worked 4.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Redshirt junior George Welch (Derry, N.H.) and redshirt freshman Conner Wagstaff (Ellsworth, Maine) worked in relief.
- Adelphi added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
- The Penmen were held without a run until the ninth inning. Redshirt sophomore Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.) doubled and scored on a double by redshirt junior Alex Kennedy (Braintree, Mass.). Redshirt freshman Dylan O'Sullivan (Manchester, N.H.) followed with an RBI single to make it 3-2. But Rivera flied out to center field to end the game.
NOTES
- SNHU's three losses have all come by one run.
- The Penmen, who had scored 121 runs in the first 11 games (11.0 game), were held to just six runs on the day.
- Henrie leads the team with a .444 average and he has at least one hit in each of the first 13 games of the season.
- SNHU moved up from 14th to 11th in the nation in the most recent national poll.
- The Penmen are 11-9 all-time against Adelphi.
