(Waltham, Mass.) – Redshirt sophomore Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored as #12 SNHU opened a Northeast-10 baseball series with an 18-0 win at Bentley University on Thursday afternoon. The Penmen matched a season-high with 21 hits in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Bentley picked up two of the team's three hits in the bottom of the first inning, and drew two walks, but couldn't produce a run off McCloskey, who didn't allow another hit in his six innings.
The Penmen jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second, an inning which featured RBI hits by graduate student Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.), Poole, Mercedes, and senior Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.).
Poole delivered two more runs with his third inning single to make it 7-0, Rivera doubled home another run, and Mercedes had an RBI single for a 9-0 lead.
Rivera's RBI single in the top of the fifth made it 10-0, and the Penmen tacked on six more runs in the seventh with the first RBIs of the day for redshirt sophomore Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.), senior Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.), and senior Ricky Jimenez (Miami, Fla.).

NOTES

SNHU, on a seven-game win streak, is ranked 12th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll and still sits atop the NCBWA East Region Poll.
The Penmen improve to 32-41 all-time against Bentley.
SNHU had 21 hits, matching a season-high. The Penmen did not hit a home run in the game - and the only two extra base hits were doubles.
Southern New Hampshire stole eight bases in the game (in eight tries), a season-high.
Schwartz singled in the seventh in his fifth at bat to extend his hit streak to 20 games. He leads the team with a .412 average.
In the NE10's Northeast Division, the Penmen (11-2) lead Franklin Pierce (8-4) by 2.5 games.

SNHU and Bentley University will play again Friday afternoon (3:30 p.m.) in Waltham, Mass. The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday.
