When and Where: April 23, 2022 - Hooksett, N.H. (SNHU Softball Field)
Game 1: Assumption University 4, Southern New Hampshire University 1
Game 2: Southern New Hampshire 8, Assumption University 6 (12 innings)
Records: SNHU 16-18 (10-8 NE10), Assumption College 14-21 (11-7 NE10)
(Hooksett, N.H.) - The SNHU softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday against the visiting Assumption Greyhounds. Assumption took the first game 4-1 and SNHU won the second game in a 12-inning thriller led by sophomore shortstop Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine), who had three hits including a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th to take the 8-6 win.

GAME 1 – Assumption 4-1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one following a few fielding miscues by the Penmen in the first and then a solo homerun in the top of the second inning from Abby Larson.

  • The Penmen cut the lead in the bottom of the second after a leadoff walk for Dickinson, a single from senior Brittany Mota (Lowell, Mass.), and a double steal to score Dickinson, 2-1.
  • Lauren Geremia led off with a single to center field in the top of the sixth inning and scored on an RBI double to center from Corin Mahan to make it 3-1 Assumption.

  • The Greyhounds would score again in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch to secure a 4-1 win.

  • Winning pitcher Erin Barry allowed just five hits and one run in the first game and improved to 8-8 on the season.

  • Sophomore Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) pitched a complete game allowing eight hits and four runs falling to 5-5.

GAME 2 – SNHU 8-6

  • Assumption took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after a double to centerfield from Jordan Dwyer followed by an RBI single from Lauren Geremia.

  • Assumptions' Mackenzie Bruggeman extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun, but the Penmen cut the lead back to 1 in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff double from senior Emily Carbonneau (Lowell, Mass.) followed by an RBI single from Dickinson to left field.

  • SNHU would tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning after leadoff batter, graduate student Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) was hit by a pitch -- she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) and scored on a single to center field from junior Abi Gray (Litchfield, N.H.).

  • Assumption threatened again in the top of the eighth inning when they capitalized on the leadoff runner being hit by a pitch and a fielding error on the next batter to put both runners in scoring position. Kali Sciracco singled to left to score both runners and Assumption took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the 8th.

  • But the Penmen answered again in the bottom of the eighth, after stringing together three hits. Gifford singled on a hard ground ball to shortstop; she then stole second, and advanced to third on a single from Dickinson. Gray hit an RBI single to right field scoring Gifford and Mota followed up with her own RBI single to right scoring Gray to tie the game 4-4.

  • Each team scored a run in the 11th inning.  The Penmen tied the game in the bottom of the frame, and had the bases loaded with no outs.  Assumption threw consecutive runners out at the plate, turning a 6-2-3 double play to retire Carbonneau as the game continued.

  • The Greyhounds took the lead again 6-5 in the top of the twelfth inning on an RBI single from Jordan Dwyer to score Mollie Verrault.

  • In the bottom of the 12th, Carbonneau was the placed runner and advanced to third on a bunt by Griffin.  Gifford reached on a fielders choice, and Dickinson hit the walk-off home run.

  • McKechnie came into the game to pitch in the eighth inning, relieving Griffin, to secure the win, improving to 6-5 on the season.

NOTES

  • Dickinson had five hits on the day, scoring three runs, walking once. The home run was her fourth of the season, and she leads the team with a .305 batting average.

  • This was the third game to go to extra innings for the Penmen this season. They are 2-1 in games that go to extra innings.   The game was longest for SNHU since a 15-inning contest ended with a loss to Adelphi in the NCAA East Super Regional in May of 2015.

  • Assumption leads the all-time series with SNHU 41-33.

UP NEXT
