(Rindge, N.H.) – Redshirt sophomore Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.) blasted a three-run home run in the seventh inning to erase an early deficit and send the 11th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team to a 3-2 win over Franklin Pierce University in the opening game of a four-game series on Friday afternoon. The teams will play two seven-inning games tomorrow afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both starters were dealing early, but it was the Ravens that struck first as they were able to scratch across two runs on four hits in the home half of the fourth inning, but stranded two to make it 2-0.
  • The Penmen had just a single by redshirt junior Alex Kennedy (Braintree, Mass.) in the third over the first six innings. In the seventh, redshirt sophomore Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) led off with a walk and redshirt sophomore Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I) singled to put runners on first and second. Senior Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) flied out to move the runners up before Schwartz homered to right field to give SNHU a 3-2 lead.
  • The Ravens would threaten to tie it in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout and groundout would strand runners at second and third to secure the victory.
  • Both teams got great starting pitching as Kyle Roche went six and two-thirds allowing three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. For the Penmen senior Angus McCloskey (Farmingdale, N.Y.) went eight innings allowing just two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts. McCloskey improved to 6-1, while Roche is now 4-1.
  • Redshirt junior Ricky Alexy (Needham, Mass.) pitched the ninth two earn his second save of the season.
