(New Haven, Conn.) - The SNHU softball team compiled 15 runs and 36 hits, but still didn't earn a win in a wild doubleheader Friday at Southern Connecticut.  The Penmen fell 6-5 in nine innings in the opener.  The nightcap was called after eight innings due to darkness, and ends in a 10-10 tie.

GAME 1 – SCSU 6-5 (9 inn.)

  • After the Owls scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Penmen took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third.
  • A bunt single by senior Brittany Mota (Lowell, Mass.) and a single by junior Bryn Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) set the table for an RBI single by sophomore Shannon Gifford (Goffstown, N.H.) and a two-run double by sophomore Alyssa Dimauro (Chester, N.H.) for a 3-1 lead.
  • The Penmen would push the lead back to two runs in the top of the fourth inning when Garczynski laid down a bunt to drive in a run.
  • Graduate student Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) homered in the fifth to put the Penmen on top 5-2.
  • Sophomore Leine McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) took the lead to the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Owls scored three runs to tie.  A single by Jessica Dumont made it 5-3, and a two-out, two-run double by Jessica Perucki tied the game.
  • Southern Connecticut won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.   A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases.  A sacrifice fly by Katrina Roy brought in the winning run against reliever freshman Gwyn Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.)
GAME 2Tie 10-10 (8 inn.)
  • The Penmen fell behind 5-0, but rallied to tie.  In the third, senior Emily Carbonneau (Lowell, Mass.) drove in the first run with a single, and sophomore Bella Dickinson (Scarborough, Maine) hit a three-run homer.
  • SNHU made it 5-5 on an RBI groundout by Griffin in the fourth.
  • An RBI single by Gifford in the fifth pulled the Penmen to within 7-6.
  • Freshman Jordyn Resetar (Hanover, Pa.) came up with a clutch two-run double to cut the lead to 9-8 in the top of the sixth.
  • SNHU went ahead 10-9 in the seventh.  Garczynski singled, and Gifford bunted her to second.  Consecutive doubles by Carbonneau and Griffin gave the Penmen the lead.
  • Dumont homered leading off the bottom of the seventh to get the Owls back even at 10-10.
  • SNHU threatened in the top of the eighth, starting the inning with a Resetar double, a single by Mota, and a single by junior Abi Gray (Litchfield, N.H.).  The Owls made three consecutive force plays, two at the plate, to keep the game tied.

NOTES
  • Seven different players had at least four hits in the doubleheader, led by Mota who went 6-for-9.
  • Dickinson's homer was her team-leading sixth.  She also leads the Penmen with a .336 average, and 26 RBI.
  • The Penmen sit in fourth place in the NE10 at 14-9-1 heading into the final day of the regular season.  Pace, at 14-10, will finish at Le Moyne Saturday.  The top four teams will earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
  • The tie was the first for the Penmen since 1991.
  • Southern Connecticut leads the all-time series 45-17-1.
