Women's Soccer Opens with 1-0 Win Over Bridgeport

Wessner's 67th-Minute Goal Stands Up for Penmen Sunday

Junior Megan Wessner (Pine Grove, Pa.) buried a one-timer from 25 yards out in the 67th minute to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a season-opening 1-0 victory over the University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Connecticut State Season Opening Classic in New Haven.

  • Graduate student Hannah Rose (Waterloo, Ontario) – shutout, seven saves
KEY MOMENTS
  • Noon dribbled into the right corner and Bridgeport failed to clear her centering pass. Wessner's left-footed blast found the net for the game's only goal. It was Wessner's first career goal, and first assist for Noon.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Rose made seven saves for her 16th career shutout.  Her overall record for the Penmen improved to 30-13.
  • Bridgeport goalkeeper Helena Dahlstrom made six saves.
  • SNHU outshot the Purple Knights, 16-12, including 8-7 on shots that went on frame.
  • The Penmen had a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 1-0 for the third straight season and the fourth time in the last five campaigns. 
  • SNHU now leads the all-time series with Bridgeport, 14-4-2. The Penmen have won six straight against the Purple Knights and are unbeaten in their last seven meetings, having not lost since Sept. 11, 2013.
  • The Penmen are now 39-13-8 (.717) over their last 60 matches dating back to the start of the 2017 campaign.
  • The team had planned to open the season against Mercy College at SCSU on Friday night, a match that was canceled because of inclement weather.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Saturday (Sept. 3) at noon when they visit The College of Staten Island.
  • SNHU opens its home slate Wednesday, Sept. 14 (1 p.m.) when it plays host to Daemen College at Penmen Stadium.
