Volleyball Improves to 4-0 for First Time Since 2009

Penmen have won 12 straight sets for first time since '18

Senior Juliana Pacini (Sao Paulo, Brazil) racked up a team-best 19 kills to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team to two more wins Sunday at the Stan Spirou Field House. SNHU downed D'Youville University, 3-0, in the first match and then came back to defeat conference-foe Saint Michael's College in three sets.

  • Sophomore Carmen Bernardis (Trieste, Italy) – 13 kills (2.17 k/s), .611 pct.,  2 digs (0.33 d/s), 2 blocks (0.33 b/s)
  • Sophomore Chiara Di Valerio (Terni, Italy) – 12 kills (2.00 k/s), 2 aces, 16 digs (2.67 d/s), 2 blocks (0.33 b/s)
  • Sophomore Madeleine Grimes (Edwardsville, Ill.) – 10 kills (3.33 k/s), .909 pct.
  • Redshirt-junior Ana Pimenta (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – 10 kills (3.33 k/s), .500 pct.

KEY MOMENTS – D'YOUVILLE MATCH
  • Two kills each from Pacini and senior Kam Blaskey (Ventura, Calif.) helped SNHU storm out to a 7-0 lead to begin the match. It was still a seven-point contest later in the opening set when four different Penmen recorded a kill, as they notched five of the final seven points to go up, 1-0.
  • D'Youville went out in front, 2-0, in the second set, when the Penmen responded with a 9-1 burst – highlighted by three kills from senior Dai Thawnghmung (Lowell, Mass.) – to grab a 9-3 lead. The Saints were within five later in the frame, but SNHU scored five of the final six to take a commanding 2-0 advantage.
  • An 8-0 run in the third set, powered by a pair of kills from Di Valerio, put the Penmen in the driver's seat 16-5. They would later tally the final five points of the match, including the final two kills from Pacini, to earn the win.

  • Set scores were 25-15, 25-16, 25-11.
  • Pacini recorded 11 kills (.412) and five digs.
  • Di Valerio posted eight kills (.583), two aces and 11 digs.
  • Blaskey registered a career-high nine kills (.533).
  • Thawnghmung tallied seven kills (.308) and four digs.
  • Bernardis added six kills (.556), three digs and two blocks.
  • Montefameglio handed out 19 assists, to go with four digs.
  • Graduate student Alice Arletti (Modena, Italy) submitted four aces.
  • Sophomore Deanne Wilson (No. Collins, N.Y.) collected five digs.
  • SNHU outhit D'Youville in all three sets, as well as .421-.107, overall.
  • The Penmen held a 9-1 advantage in aces, while the Saints returned the favor in blocks, 6-2.
KEY MOMENTS – SAINT MICHAEL'S MATCH
  • SNHU led by five in the opening set before scoring 12 of the final 14 points – highlighted by two kills each from Pacini, Di Valerio and Grimes – to go in front, 1-0.
  • The Penmen were only up by three in the second stanza when it notched nine of the final 13 to make it 2-0. Grimes recorded three kills during the stretch, while Pacini added a pair.
  • Saint Michael's held a 6-3 advantage before SNHU rattled off 11 straight points – powered by four kills from Pimenta and two from junior Claire Wohlleber (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) – to grab a 14-6 lead.

  • Set scores were 25-10, 25-17, 25-11.
  • Grimes ripped off a season-best 10 kills on 11 swings (.909).
  • Pimenta also recorded 10 kills (.500).
  • Pacini notched eight kills (.421) and five digs.
  • Bernardis posted seven kills (.667) and two blocks.
  • Wohlleber added five kills (.308), three blocks and three digs.
  • Wilson collected 10 digs, dished six assists and produced three aces.
  • Di Valerio chipped in four kills and five digs.
  • Knox and Montefameglio dished 18 and 16 assists, respectively.
  • SNHU outhit Saint Michael's in all three sets, as well as .419-.093 for the match.
  • The Penmen owned advantages in aces (7-2) and blocks (4-1).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire begins the season 4-0 for the first time since 2009, with all four wins coming in three sets.
  • The Penmen capture 12 straight sets for the first time since Sept. 15-Oct. 9, 2018 when they won 15-in-a-row during a five-match winning streak.
  • SNHU had not hit over .400 in a match since hitting .466 against Saint Michael's on Sept. 7, 2019.
  • The meeting with D'Youville was the first in program history for the Penmen.
  • SNHU, which improves to 23-8 all-time against Saint Michael's, has captured 12 of 13, including six straight, against the Purple Knights. The Penmen have also won 13 straight at home against SMC, last losing Oct. 27, 2000.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen return to action Sept. 2-3 for four matches at Flagler College's Flagler Saints Classic in St. Augustine, Fla. The open up against Eckerd College on Friday at 11 a.m.
  • SNHU is back home Tuesday, Sept. 27 (7 p.m.) when it plays host to Saint Michael's at the Field House.
