Graduate student Verena Weindl (Munich, Germany) clinched a hard-fought victory with a win at No. 4 singles, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team posted a 6-1 win against the University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Weindl defeated Alyssa Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4. She also clinched the doubles point along with freshman Alina Kupfer (Munich, Germany), as they pulled out a 7-6 (7-5) win against Lucia Placido and Valentinna Ferrarini at No. 2 doubles.
- Kupfer was a 6-3, 6-0 winner against Karim Carreras at No. 2 singles.
- Senior Magdalena Hubickova (Prague, Czech Republic), who was named the NE10 Player of the Week earlier Tuesday, notched a 6-4, 6-2 No. 1 singles victory over Farrarini, in addition to picking up a No. 1 doubles win, as she and graduate student Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) outlasted Carreras and Gaayatri Shankar, 7-6 (7-3).
- Etienne made easy work of Shankar, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.
- Sophomore Guntra Upeniece (Riga, Latvia) rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Alexa Orlando at No. 6 singles.
NOTES
- Junior Isabella Andrade (Cochabamba, Bolivia) dropped a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-4 decision to Kacie Banks at No. 5 singles. She and Upeniece were also narrowly upended, 7-5, at No. 3 doubles by Banks and Orlando.
- Southern New Hampshire begins the season 3-0 for the third straight year.
- The Penmen improve to 13-1 all-time against New Haven and have now won two straight in the series. SNHU is now 7-1 at home against the Chargers, but wins its first match against UNH there since Sept. 25, 2016 (8-1).
