Timberlake's 24 Leads Penmen, but Late Rally Falls Short To SCSU

Knight Adds Career-High 16 Rebounds for SNHU

Senior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.) matched a season-high with 24 points, but SNHU could not dig out of a 16-point deficit and fell 62-58 to Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday at the Stan Spirou Field House.

  • Senior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) – 9 points (4-6 FG, 1-2 3-PT)
  • Junior Julia Colby (So. Paris, Maine) – 6 points (2-7 FG, 1-3 3-PT, 1-2 FT), 2 rebounds, 2 steals
  • Junior Jess Knight (Hanover, Mass.)- 11 points (3-14 FG, 5-6 FT), 16 rebounds, 2 assists
KEY MOMENTS
  • Koivisto hit for six points on three field goals in the opening ten minutes, but Southern Connecticut's Delaney Haines drained three three-pointers to give the Owls a 17-15 edge at the end of one period.
  • The Owls built the lead to 37-25 at halftime, largely on terrific three-point shooting.  Southern Connecticut was 7-for-10 from three-point range in the half, including a buzzer-beater by Haines.
  • SNHU trailed by 16 at the under-five-minute timeout in the third quarter, but a 12-4 run to close the period made it 50-42 heading to the fourth.  Timberlake hit three field goals, including a pair of threes, to help close the gap.
  • The Penmen would rally to tie the game at 58 thanks to a field goal and free throw by Colby, but the Owls reclaimed the lead with 25.8 seconds left on a layup by Delaney Connors and Isabella Santoro hit two clutch free throws in the closing seconds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Southern Connecticut hit 36.2% on 21-58 for the game, and the Penmen were 35.1% on 20-57.
  • The Owls finished the game 8-17 (47.1%) from beyond the arc.  SNHU was 6-15 (40.0%)
  • The Penmen were outrebounded 37-36 and the Owls had a 10-6 advantage on second-chance points.
  • From the line, Southern Connecticut was 92.3% (12-13).  SNHU was 75.0% (12-16).
  • Each team turned the ball over 14 times in the game.
NOTES
  • SNHU falls a game behind first-place Assumption in the NE10 standings at 9-3 in league play, tied with Bentley for second place.
  • The teams split the two conference games played in 2022-23.  SNHU had opened conference play with a 58-55 win in New Haven on November 19.  The Owls lead the all-time series 41-29.
  • SNHU is 34-11 (.756) since the start of the 2021-22 season.
  • Timberlake has now scored at least 10 points in 16 of the 17 games this season.
  • Knight has ten double-doubles in the 15 games in which she has played.  Her 16 rebounds were a new career-high.

  • The Penmen will be back at the Stan Spirou Field House on Saturday (January 28) to play Pace in a Northeast-10 contest scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
