Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak to Eight Games

Three Score in Double Figures in 58-52 win at AIC Wednesday

Senior Adriana Timberlake (Braintree, Mass.), junior Jess Knight (Hanover, Mass.) and graduate student Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) all scored in double figures as SNHU won 58-52 at American International College on Wednesday in Springfield, Mass.

  • Timberlake – 18 points (8-16 FG, 2-6 3-FG), 3 rebounds, 2 assists
  • Knight – 14 points (3-7 FG, 8-9 FT), 8 rebounds, 3 blocks
  • Roy – 12 points (3-8 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 5-6 FT), 5 rebounds
  • Senior Ariana Koivisto (Pomfret, Conn.) – 5 points (2-5 FG, 1-4 3-FG, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks
  • Freshman Emily Greenwood (Manchester, N.H.) – 5 points (2-4 FG, 1-2 3-FG)
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Penmen did not hit a field goal until Roy knocked down a jumper with 6:17 to play in the first quarter.  It took another 3:07 before Timberlake's lay-up cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 11-6.   Two free throws by Knight with 10 seconds left in the quarter gave the Penmen a 12-11 advantage after the first period.
  • SNHU hit three-of-five three-point field goals in the second quarter, two by Roy, and led 30-28 at halftime.
  • The Penmen led by as many as five points through the third quarter, but a layup by Taylor Tomlinson (23 points), drew AIC to within 42-41 at the end of the frame.
  • SNHU used a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter and did not relinquish the lead.  Three-pointers by Koivisto and Timberlake made it 48-41, Knight hit a pair of free throws, and Timberlake hit on another jumper in less than three minutes to open the fourth.
  • A relentless AIC defense forced a few turnovers late, and a three-pointer by Nora Young cut the lead to 54-52 with 37 seconds remaining.  A lay-up by Knight, and free throws by Knight and Roy sealed the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • SNHU shot 42.6% (20-47) for the game compared to just 31.3% (21-67) for the Yellow Jackets.  The Penmen were 33.3% (5-15) from three-point range and AIC was 25.0% (3-12).
  • The Penmen had a slim 35-29 rebounding edge, led by Kovisto with nine.  Knight and sophomore Sydnie DeVries (Monson, Mass.) each pulled down eight.  The eight boards were a career-high for DeVries.
  • SNHU turned the ball over 20 times to just 10 for the Yellow Jackets.
  • From the line, the Penmen hit 76.5% (13-17) and AIC hit 58.3% (7-12).
  • AIC had a 26-24 edge on points in the point, and a 15-12 edge on points off turnovers.
NOTES
  • SNHU received votes in this week's D2SIDA media poll after taking down previously unbeaten Assumption on Dec. 31.
  • At 6-1 in the NE10, the Penmen remain tied for first with Assumption and Bentley.
  • The Penmen have won the last six meetings with AIC.  The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series 25-17.
  • The Penmen have won eight straight games for the first time since opening the 2015-16 season with eight consecutive wins. 
  • SNHU improves to 31-9 (.775) since the start of the 2021-22 season.
  • Timberlake, who has scored 10 or more points in 11 of 12 contests this year, is in the midst of an eight-game, double-digit scoring streak, during which, she is netting 18.4 ppg.  She ranks second in the NE10 at 17.1 points per game. 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Penmen will travel to Saint Michael's College on Saturday (Jan. 7) for a 1:30 p.m. contest.
  • The next home game for SNHU will be Tuesday (Jan. 10) against the University of New Haven.
