Women's Tennis Claims Share of Regular Season Title with 7-0 Blanking of FPU

Penmen earn second straight NE10 Regular-Season Championship

Freshman Nadia Alden (Edmond, Okla.) cruised to a sweep at No. 5 singles, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team clinched a share of the NE10 Regular-Season Championship with a 7-0 blanking of Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Alden blanked Sophia Hyres, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. She and junior Katelyn Nichols (Manchester, N.H.) also won by default at No. 3 doubles.
  • Nichols also won by default at No. 6 singles.
  • Sophomore Alina Kupfer (Baldham, Germany) edged Aynara Ferraz, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. She also combined with graduate student Verena Weindl (Munich, Germany) for a 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Ferraz and Maria Paz Diaz.
  • Weindl took down Zoe Asterio Correa, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
  • Freshman Dajana Abadzic (Weinstadt, Germany) was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Paz Diaz at No. 3 singles. She also teamed with senior Eleonora Guglielmetti (Novara, Italy) for a 6-1 victory against Asterio Correa and Dylan Smith at No. 2 doubles.
  • Guglielmetti breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory versus Smith at No. 5 singles.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire has now won seven straight matches.
  • SNHU clinches at least a two-way share of the NE10 Regular-Season Championship with Adelphi University. The University of New Haven can make it a three-way split of the title with a victory Sunday against American International College. The Penmen are locked into the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NE10 Championship, which begins Wednesday. The top two seeds receive a bye into the semifinal round.
  • It is the seventh regular season title for Southern New Hampshire and the first back-to-back championships since it captured four-in-a-row from 2009-12.
  • The Penmen are now 23-8 all-time against Franklin Pierce and have won three straight.

  • The Penmen will host an NE10 Championship semifinal match on Friday, Oct. 20 at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
