(Marietta, Ohio) - Junior Danniel Rivera had three hits including a home run, and junior Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.) went 5-for-5 with five runs scored as SNHU baseball swept a doubleheader from Fairmont State 16-4 and 11-0 on Saturday.  Junior Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) and graduate student Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) both delivered quality starts.

KEY MOMENTS – GAME 1
  • After falling behind 1-0, the Penmen moved into the lead in the top of the second inning.  Schwartz walked and sophomore Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) walked.  Schwartz scored when sophomore Gabe Passey (Moses Lake, Wash.) reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore Zachary Ranney (Wallingford, Conn.) grounded out to plate Burgos.
  • Rivera led off the top of the third inning with a home run to make it 3-1 Penmen.
  • Redshirt junior Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) walked and stole two bases before scoring on a single by LaRocca.  Schwartz singled, and after a groundout, Burgos singled home a pair to make it 6-1 SNHU.
  • Schwartz tripled and scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 7-1 in the fifth.
  • In the top of the sixth, Ranney singled and sophomore Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.) homered for a 9-1 lead.
  • Three more runs were scored in the top of the seventh on a Caraher single, and a two-run double by junior Dylan O'Sullivan (Manchester, N.H.) to make it 12-1.
  • A double by pinch-hitter freshman Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) in the top of the ninth produced another run, and Rivera (RBI singled), Mercedes (SF), and sophomore Jake Ranney (Wallingford, Conn.) double led to three more.
  • White allowed one run in his six innings, allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out seven.  Relief support was provided by junior Griffin Gilbert (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 1
  • It was the first home run of the season for Rivera, who now has 14 for his career.
  • Segura's first career hit was a home run.
  • Schwartz went 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch, and three runs scored.
KEY MOMENTS – GAME 2
  • Roberge worked six scoreless innings for the Penmen, allowing just three hits.  He walked two and struck out six.  Freshman Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.) worked the seventh inning to complete the shutout.
  • Caraher went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and LaRocca was 3-4 for an RBI.  Schwartz had two hits and drew two walks.
  • Caraher opened the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the first inning.
  • The Penmen had a four-run fifth inning to break the game open.  Sophomore Connor Burgess (Halifax, Mass.) had a two-run double for the Penmen in the inning.
  • SNHU scored four more runs in the top of the sixth inning with LaRocca, Schwartz, Caraher, and Zachary Ranney driving in runs.
  • Sophomore John Chacho (Seymour, Conn.) knocked in the final run with a double in the top of the seventh to score sophomore Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.), who had singled.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – GAME 2
  • The Penmen have now scored 107 runs in the first 13 games of the season (8.2 runs per game). 
  • Schwartz leads the Penmen with a .429 average (18-for-42) and a .556 OBP.  He reached base on all eight plate appearances in the doubleheader.
  • LaRocca (.417) is tops on the squad with eight extra-base hits, including three homers, and 18 RBI.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire is ranked 15th in the Collegiate Baseball  NCAA Division II Poll and tied for ninth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II Top 25.
  • These games represent the first meetings between the two programs.  Fairmont State, based in Fairmont, West Virginia, is a member of the Mountain East Conference.
